Following @georgianfun.bsky.social's groundbreaking research on John London, the earliest known Black voter in Britain, more research has gone into discovering instances of Black political participation in the 18th century, as Dr Robin Eagles investigates.

New slavery trial reports: Alfred v. Fitzjames, 1799, a claim for back wages.

Espinasse's probably dodgy account, and a contemporary newspaper's version:

Help, I can't breathe 😆🥊

LADY BOXERS. Lady boxers are not new. A challenge to fight and an acceptance between lady boxers appeared in ‘‘The Daily Post' as far back as 1728. The advertisements are too long to quote in full, but the challenge was issued by ‘‘Ann Field, of Stroke-Newington, ass-driver,” to Mrs ‘Stokes, styled the English Championess, “to a trial of the best skill in boxing, for 10 pounds, fair rise or fall.”” Mrs Stokes acoepted the challenge, none too politely, it must be said. She referred to ‘‘the famous Stoke-Newington ass-woman,”’ and went on to say ‘‘the blows which I will present her will be more difficult to digest than she ever gave her ass." Perhaps some sporting enthusiast will be able to tell us result of this encounter.

‘The result is an intriguing experiment in democratised curation, substituting a sense of deliberate polish in the displays for a madcap cabinet-of-curiosities.’ Matthew Kerr visits the renovated Hull Maritime Museum in Yorkshire, and likes the cut of its jib.

Was John London Britain's first Black voter?

The 1749 Westminster by-election may seem unremarkable in its result. However, as @georgianfun.bsky.social explores, the election provides the earliest known record of a Black person voting in a British parliamentary election.
