Join us on Thursday at noon Eastern, right here on the internet, for a virtual rally to learn about the latest on the academy of natural sciences fiasco, and what YOU can do about it.

We've got a killer lineup of speakers and more coming soon.

Register here:

a poster for a virutal rally to save the academy of natural sciences. There's a stag beetle in a headseat, on a zoom call with Alie ward who is a praying mantis, Kory Evans who is a splended garden eel, Jessica Ware who is a white shark, Allison Tumarkin-Deratzian who is a weevil, Isa betancourt who is a snail, and Tykee James who is a green boa. The stag beetle is saying "learn about actions you can take" and a bluejay is saying "Join us Thurs Oct 15th, Noon-1pm ET"

The theme today for Cephalopod Awareness Week is fossils so the 12yo is declaring Orthoceras regulare Appreciation Day! These cone shaped nautiloid cephalopods (who seemingly forgot to roll up in a spiral like their cousins) lived in the Middle Ordovician 470 to 458 Million Years ago.

This turtle looks like the living manifestation of a Pixar “girl turtle”, does that make sense??

bailarina na escuridão. 🍂

#TrevasTropicais #fotografia #invertebrates

Golden record

Three panel comic. Panel 1: Carl Sagan and a scientist colleague look into space, watching Voyager 1 (an unmanned space device designed to float eternally away from earth) fly into deep space. Sagan says, “well, away she goes. The next big step in extraterrestrial contact.” Panel 2: he asks his colleague, “what album did you decide to put on it?” Panel 3: Voyager 1 drifts away, earth shrinking in the distance. Attached to the spacecraft is a CD copy of Gucci Mane - Trap Story. The album cover is absolutely insane and designed to looked like a Toy Story spoof with a ton of jewelry and a trap house in the background. At the far end of the universe, 24 shnillion years from now: two bizarre aliens stand next to each other and listen to a CD player. One says, “dang, this goes hard.”

I missed #KrakenDay yesterday on account of belatedly celebrating Squittleday, so today in honor of "all the fantastical cephalopods of myth, movies, literature and legend" here is How To Draw An Octopus Merperson

The Southern Sand Octopus (Octopus kaurna) is a lanky octopus that is an expert in burrowing under the sand.

They use their siphon to jet water into the sand to fluidize it, then they start digging and pull themselves in. Then use their long arms to make a hole so they can breathe.

Its head and prolate spheroid shaped mantle are completely out of the sand, but its arms are all mixed up in the sand. The mantle is partially inflated and light orange. Happy belated #Squittleday, October 10th, on which we celebrate the ten-armed squid and cuttlefish! I was in the woods yesterday, but here a few favorites from the archives 🦑🥂 (anyone spot the alt text Shakespeare reference?)

The ID on the octopus in the video isn't 100%, but the most likely ID is Inopinoteuthis magna

The big-eye jellyhead (Inopinoteuthis magna), in addition to having a very silly name, is thought to be the largest species of cirrate octopus, a group of octopus with small tendrils called cirri, fins and an internal shell.

One specimen of this species had a total length of 1.7 m.

on the shores of Japan visitors come to see the blue glow and they are a boon to fishermen who collect the dying squid. Thea adorable Bobtail squid (actually, not a squid, but a cephalopod of order Sepiolida, closer to cuttlefish) are also called dumpling squid or stubby squid.

My cute and round little bobtail squid linocut in white and orange on 8” x 8” black washi paper.

thanks to bioluminescent organs and its unique slow oxygen metabolism. Its eyes are disproportionately large. Despite its name it feeds on detritus, not blood. The firefly squid (Watasenia scintillans), also called sparkling enope squid or hotaru-ika in Japan live at depth (200 to 400 m) and they

My linocut print shows the firefly squid against a white background on the left side of the square so you can see the whole animal and then its reflection is shown on the right against dark blue so you can see how its bioluminescence would appear underwater with fluorescent blue spots. On the left it’s a deep orange-pink squid with large gold and black eye. On the right you can see its body is covered with bright blue spots. The print is 8" x 8" (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm) on white Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

October 10 is Squid and Cuttlefish Awareness Day - or Squittle Day for the tentacular cephalopods, so enjoy my linocuts of a vampire squid, firefly squid & bobtail squid! The vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis)or the ‘vampire squid from hell’ is a small deep sea cephalopod found throughout

This is a hand-carved and hand-printed lino block print on delicate ivory Japanese mulberry paper, 9.25” x 12.5” of a vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis). The ‘vampire squid from hell’ is a small deep sea cephalopod found throughout temperate and tropical oceans with two long retractile filaments, located between the first two pairs of arms on its dorsal side, unlike either octopuses or squids. The squid is upside down with purple head and yellow tent like areas between its legs. The filaments arc around above against the blue background.
