This was a great review—succinctly sums up the arguments of the book that it’s reviewing; explains why those arguments are important; transmits the excitement at encountering and engaging with those arguments. And since it’s about the state of publishing today, I hope writers on here read it.

Had the immense pleasure of reviewing Content Machines by @sarahbrouillette.bsky.social for Defector. It's a must-read on the state of the "literary," and much else. Thanks to my editor @brandyjensen.bsky.social!

This is always nice to see, but especially so here since it’s gotta be one of the first quotes from a piece of @defector.com book criticism to make it into a book’s paperback edition. Many more to come thanks to @brandyjensen.bsky.social and team. Huge credit to them for making space for the books.

Praise page for the paperback edition of Joshua Wheeler’s The High Heaven. Text reads:

PRAISE FOR THE HIGH HEAVEN

"In a novel of cosmic proportions like Wheeler's, it is striking just how carefully and beautifully the book attends to the out-of-the-way places that feature in it.... If there's one message Wheeler's novel brings into sharp focus, it's this: We belong here, with and for each other."
-Joel Pinckney, Defector

"Joshua Wheeler's debut novel has got me rethinking my stake in the uni-verse.... Oliver and Izzy's buddy exploits are the most entrancing first 100 pages of a book I've read in some time.... Even when Izzy's journey descends into dark territories, Wheeler... writes like he's having a blast."
-Rien Fertel, The Times-Picayune (New Orleans)

"Paying homage to Southern gothics and Westerns, The High Heaven explores the Space Age in a wickedly stunning narrative."
—Sam Franzini, Our Culture

"Wheeler marries a memoirist's skill for exposition to a poet's knack for image and sound.... The High Heaven is written with a restraint that reflects the author's evolution as a stylist. At the same time, Wheeler retains a penchant for idiosyncratic diction, colorful adverbs, and enjoyably off-kilter constructions.... His prose achieves a potent fusion of symbol, genre, and narrative."
-Jake Bartman, Full Stop

"Stunning. ... Izzy's tale is strange and wild, but it's also one that illuminates our national obsession with new highs, and new heights. Fans of Tom Robbins, Barry Hannah, and Harry Crews should check out this dynamic, fresh life-on-the-road novel."
Kirkus Reviews

"In his first novel, composed in weird and luminous prose and based on a true story, (Wheeler) interrogates powerful ambivalence about religion and explores the possibilities of transcendence."

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today.
www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
