The targeting of one data center is proving a really useful natural experiment showing which sites and ideologies are an echo chamber of Russian propaganda

Uh oh, did someone’s website and personal account experience a big drop in activity after Ukraine hit a Russian data center?

I'm writing about 'media capture' now and in Nazi Germany and reading this makes my blood run cold...look what Goebbels did to the radio just weeks before "the last competitive elections" in Germany before WW2:

The best piece of advice I was ever given in the sphere of looking for lost things was "look harder in the place you first thought of." In my experience, it's a 95% successful strategy. In recent days it's worked for earrings, glasses and keys.

Let’s remind Americans this means they are filling their tanks with Ukrainian blood. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦šŸ©øā›½ļø Trump's desperate attempt to lower fuel prices just before the midterm elections is simultaneously helping Putin sow even more death and destruction in Ukraine.

New primer about the news from the last few hours that the US is getting back to business with Russia. This is not Trump being erratic, it is not about diesel, it is not a small move. It is about the US moving to a more active position of helping Putin. phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/this-is-ab...

ā€œThere’s nothing so powerful in šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§politics as the rightwing unreality machine...
It’s a place where Brexit will be cost free, Ed Miliband is a Marxist, Liz Truss was a serious political figureā€ā€¦and Badenoch is shielded from her own X-fuelled mediocrity.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as ā€œideologicalā€, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as ā€œpragmaticā€ and ā€œeconomicā€.

Who wants a vase of flowers by Breughel the Elder to cheer up a gloomy October evening? I love his little details like the moths and other insects on the flowers and table. It's my mother's favourite still life and today I took her to see it irl at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

Very unusual to see a Nobel Prize going to a botanist! Botany is the oldest science & all others grew from It in ways. I realise now that compared to our fellow students doing other biological subjects we had a lot of history to learn. You’d think the announcement would include a link to why he won!

Look at these beauties, as nuanced and richly shaded as a still life Old Master: sloes, picked, frozen, defrosted and about to be immersed in gin. In years gone by I'd wait to pick them until after the first frost. But now the first frost comes too late in the season for the gin to fully develop.

'Undercover' is a fascinating history of Victorian investigative journalism, revealing the lengths journalists went to to expose awful conditions in homeless hostels, asylums and transatlantic steerage. My review here:

This is straight out of the Victor Orban playbook. Imagine what they would do to the news media if they actually won power.

I've been a member of the lobby for well over a decade. Not a single one of my lobby colleagues has said a word about the Conservatives banning me from their conferences, without any explanation. Contrast with the US where even Fox News stood in solidarity when Trump banned news outlets he disliked

Today we remember Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi eight years after his murder. A critic of the regime, Khashoggi was brutally killed at the Saudi consulate in Turkey. Justice has still not been served.

Although I think he has elevated the bland and meaningless metaphor to virtually an artform. He's actually better than AI at creating frictionless prose that means sweet FA.
