The “literacies“ framework is as intellectually bankrupt as polarization right now. We will keep using it because when you’ve got one hammer and the NSF social science funding has dried up everything looks like a nostalgic managerial class nail.

From a completely different context, but extremely relevant: "There’s a deep faith at the heart of liberalism that education is it: provide the information in a neutral way, and let people make up their own minds about their values." —

EXACTLY this. They KNOW what they’re doing. In fact, it is the point. They’re not “dehumanizing” their victim—they recognize her agency and choose to destroy it, and that is exactly what excites them.

"You can teach a man what consent looks like but you can’t force him to care about it. It follows, I think, that we need radical solutions here: abolishing all-male institutions where such misogyny proliferates and festers and is fastidiously protected."

Yet another brilliant piece by @katemanne.bsky.social.

"Education is, in the end, an individualistic and shallow response to a deep and structural problem. And it mistakenly identifies false beliefs rather than bad desires as the problem."

You can educate a man about consent all you want; you can't force him to care about it katemanne.substack.com/p/they-didnt...

Kate Manne wrote another brilliant essay about the Cornell case. This time, it's about her own experiences interacting with Cornell's police department.

Thanks, and feeling very precarious now for sure. But it's the right thing to do

“… members of a fraternity posted vile things about her on social media… taking photos of her at her workplace on campus… She went to report it to CUPD at the encouragement of her boss... ‘They sent a male officer to take my statement. He informed me that I should be “flattered” by the posts’…”

Abolish the CUPD katemanne.substack.com/p/that-time-...

@katemanne.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 4:09 PM

In my considered opinion, CUPD is on the side of the frats katemanne.substack.com/p/whose-side...

Well, look at this: in 2025 a couple Cornell University police officers were disciplined for “sexual harassment in the workplace,” according to this report shared by @katemanne.bsky.social in her latest newsletter cupolice.cornell.edu/wp-content/u...

Almost twice as likely, yes (compared to 29% of non-Greek-affiliated female students, which is still shockingly high but on par with national averages)

This is a tough read.

Having taught at various U.S. universities, I have been amazed by the fact that sexual assault is endemic and most of the little debate has been focused on protecting men from false accusations (which rarely happens) — himpathy, as @katemanne.bsky.social coined.

Frats are virtually uninsurable. That's how dangerous they are—right up there with hazardous waste collection and asbestos removal. Let that sink in katemanne.substack.com/p/ban-the-fu...

In light of all the horrible sexual assault in the news, this from my conversation with Kate Manne in February at Princeton still sums up my thoughts. Power =\= Good Men(tm). Power = Power.

"The dangers of fraternities were so widespread [...] they had been ranked as the “sixth worst risk for insurance companies—just behind hazardous waste disposal companies and asbestos contractors.” So dangerous were their activities that their commercial insurance carriers declined insuring [...]."

Ban the fucking frats and, if you care about self-protection in the way many of us do, please avoid them katemanne.substack.com/p/ban-the-fu...

I'm a Cornell Alum who was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity during the 80s.

I'm taking a side.

These crimes committed at #Cornell are horrific.

I agree with @katemanne.bsky.social: "I want to add here in the clearest terms possible: ban the fucking frats."

Cornell police edited Jane Doe's statement. Are we in pitchforks and torches territory yet? I think we are close. "As we now know, Cornell police also condensed down Doe's statement, omitting crucial details including the fact that she said she was 100 percent confident she’d been raped."
