NEW: The feds have filed their update in one of the multiple ongoing lawsuits seeking to restrict mifepristone, this one out of Louisiana. It says the FDA plans to complete its “review” of mifepristone’s safety by December, and release a report by March. Notably—after the midterm elections.

I’m fairly certain that the Nassar case broke records for how much a school had to pay from a single lawsuit.

@nbedera.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 11:14 PM

Even then, their view of liability is so skewed. Violating victims’ rights and discriminating against victims are both illegal! Schools’ sexual violence responses has created a massive amount of liability, including many of the biggest lawsuits against universities.

It is never just one case gone wrong. There are always so many other survivors who were mistreated before any of these stories make it into the public eye.

"My assailant was found responsible for my sexual assault ... His punishment? He received a 'written reprimand,' was ordered to write a 'reflection paper,' and was placed on behavioral probation until he graduated two months later."

That’s really common. Especially if survivors are surrounded by messaging about “mutual abuse.” (And it’s everywhere, so it’s hard for any survivor to escape it.)

DARVO gives moral cover to rape apologists. It creates just enough ambiguity over what happened to offer plausible deniability to those who want to hurt victims.

@nbedera.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:48 PM

One of the most unsettling things about being a victim of DARVO is watching all the people and systems that didn’t take you seriously rally around your perpetrator to punish you.

@nbedera.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:45 PM

The most common type of false allegation of sexual violence is DARVO complaints made by perpetrators against their very real victims. DARVO stands for Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. It’s a way perpetrators avoid accountability by accusing their victims of wrongdoing.

I have been thinking about this article, and particularly this excerpt, quite a lot over the last couple of days. It’s a “research demonstrates what we already knew” scenario, like chronic pain finally leaving traces on an MRI. I’ve known my whole life. I’m so tired of knowing.

Screenshot reading:

Let's start with what people misunderstand about sexual violence on college campuses.

One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.

For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

last night eyewitnesses saw Oscar Belgal — the man shot by ICE with his 5 year old in the car — discharged from the hospital into ICE custody, with feds speeding off as NYPD cleared the roads for them of protesters. his attorneys don't know where he is; he's seemingly been taken out of NY state.

Mind you, we don’t actually see any of our legal processes mobilized for victims the way we see them mobilized by perpetrators. It’s all just a victim-blaming justification for violence victims experience at the hands of the system itself.

@nbedera.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 3:58 PM

The general sense from law enforcement is that victims are “asking for it” by expecting systems to take concerns about violence seriously. A kind of, “If you want us to believe you, then we have to believe your abuser who said you were dangerous.”

@nbedera.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 3:58 PM

Swatting is just one way that violent men weaponize our social institutions into an arm of their abuse. In recent years, we have seen an explosion of abusers using the criminal and civil legal systems to harass and traumatize victims. It’s a recognizable pattern and it just keeps happening.

Part (but far from all) of what's horrific here is: a woman weighing the consequences of speaking up about being sexually assaulted, because speaking up imposes burdens and costs (and so does not speaking up).
