What young people need to know is this: Prior to about 1990, every house in America reeked of cigarettes. Even the houses of non-smokers had prominently-displayed ashtrays, and asshole friends/relatives who'd visit & freely smoke in them anyways All houses smelt like ashtrays until ~35 years ago 🚬

I smoked in one apartment I lived in one time (on campus, too; rough, shouldn't have done it), and it basically ruined that apartment (more like a single room with a bathroom, and it was all tiled, so I was like, 'It's probably fine,' and it wasn't fine), and goddamn, that taught me. I've since given up cigarettes, thank goodness, but even when I hadn't, I never again smoked inside any place I lived or that anyone was supposed to live.What's not occurring to her at all, as she marvels at the presumptuousness of this stranger, is that he's lit up a cigarette in her home. That was SO fucking normal. Of all the things he's doing to fuck up her day, that is not one of them lolol.
