The NIH proposal to conceal reviewer scores from program officers, investigators, and advisory councils is ill-conceived, introduces disproportionate weight to small percentile differences, diminishes the role of scientific peer review, and should be withdrawn in its entirety. a 🧵

I could not be more grateful for the friends and collaborators @unbreaking.org has brought into my life.

Thank you all SO MUCH.

UPDATE: After hearing from friends in the DMs, we’re gonna make this a cohosted gathering. So after my censored remarks, we’ll hear about people actually doing the work that so many of our institutions pretend to. If your org wants to cohost, DM me.

It is truly exhausting to see this kind of organizational cowardice (not to mention the stunning disrespect and abysmal preparation).

People in California who are facing a terrible ICE surge: remember that if you need whistles, we are still sending them out for free.

In fact, we just passed 1.7 million whistles sent out.

The census, at bottom level, is an exercise in world building via data collection. Viewed in this light, these changes disappear millions of people from our shared world. It is an exercise in building a world without them.

Trump announced $100M to train U.S. citizen scientists only. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

These are not new funds. NSF underspent its education funds by $100M this past year.

Of course, it pales in comparison to the $560M lost due to terminated NSF education grants: grantwitness.org/nsf 🧪

Trump Makes $100 Million Push to Train American Scientists

By Liam Knox

The Trump administration is injecting more than $100 million into education programs for American researchers in STEM fields, as federal policies stanch the flow of foreign scientists to the US and policymakers focus on an AI arms race with China.
The initiative, which President Donald Trump is set to announce at a White House summit on Thursday, aims to increase the number of highly trained scientific researchers who are American citizens through fellowships for PhD programs in science and engineering disciplines, according to a White House official.

Imagine a room full of brilliant jazz musicians, all playing solos, none of them listening to each other.

That's climate communication right now--and we have the data to prove it.

Absolutely. We are going to need some elegant survey designs to adequately capture the full reality of what this all has done

In 1974, Cornell lecturer Lin Farley began recognizing a pattern in the experiences women shared in her Women and Work course: women were being pushed out of jobs by men’s sexual behavior. Farley coined the term, “sexual harassment.”

David’s essay reveals clearly that this is not the priority of OpenAI. The “alignment problem” here is that the values of human wellbeing and humility are misaligned with the risk culture and social indifference of some in Silicon Valley. This is the first order problem.

I think all of us must seriously confront the prospect that our good-faith critiques can and will be co-opted. This does NOT mean silence is the only option, but careful consideration and open discussion of who we welcome as allies, funders, and champions feels like a bare minimum.

Mixed feelings about this one. The Arday case is painful, and I get vulnerable in this piece. But the message is important, and it draws some of my favorite research, led by Brittany Torrez with @mwkraus.bsky.social .

New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:
