This penultimate paragraph in @gregsargent.bsky.social’s new piece is a devastating summary of the GOP’s racial politics.

Politics, politics, politics
People don't like being the target of a violent ethnic cleansing campaign, even if they once bought the lie that such an effort would target dangerous criminals only. The Trump regime, Republicans, ICE and right-wing media have repeatedly shown that by "dangerous criminal" they mean "looks Latino."
Calling my shot: we will see less than half as many pundit-consultant pieces about this Latino realignment as we saw in the other direction 2021-2025, because a Latino blue shift doesn’t fit the Dems-Too-Woke narrative
Yep, no question. Let's recall that those arguing that 2024 heralded a multiracial working class realignment were expressly using that to argue that Dems had become too liberal on cultural issues and immigration. There will never be any reckoning for any of it.
The Latino reversion back to 2016/2018 margins is gonna be biblical
People don't like it when you hunt them. Even if they voted for you to hunt them.
“Incredibly, 60 percent of independents disapprove strongly. I genuinely don’t know if any president has equaled that in the past. I suspect probably not.”
my god
Really enjoyed talking to @thorbenson.bsky.social at @atrupar.com's great Public Notice site about the three pillars of Trumpism (tariffs, ethnic purges, America First militarism) and how they're all eroding/collapsing:
One key point @nicholasgrossman.bsky.social makes here is that if Dems win the midterms (and win in 2028), deploying congressional power creatively to unwind Elon Musk's sway over the government (contracts, etc) will be essential to any reconstruction:

Good News:
Latinos in OKC and the surrounding suburbs will help flip #OK05 for @jenanelson.bsky.social
“Democrats can’t take Latinos for granted in 2028. But it’s hard to see JD Vance recapturing many of them as long as they continue getting brutalized by Trump’s economy and deportation paramilitary. A Latino full-scale shift back to Democrats may deal a blow to MAGA long past the midterms.”
time to hit the gas ...
"If this early trend holds—and if Latinos help deliver a resounding Democratic victory—that chart on raw vote totals will have captured what may be the beginning of the end."
As for how Trump and MAGA viewed it, they did very consciously deliver a much less ideological message to Latinos, one purged of the ethic cleansing aspirations, by saying, "we're only going after the bad ones"
I'm talking about the conclusion that many *pundits and commentators* drew (wrongly) from the election. They wanted to believe libs/Dems were losing non-whites to the lure of "right wing populist nationalism." So they overinterpreted 2024 to make it so.
Here’s hoping
Pundit overread of 2024 as the birth of a multiracial working class movement anchored around right wing nationalism was disastrous for this country. It helped encourage lots of elite capitulation and caused libs/Dems to trim their sails. If this election buries that myth there should be a reckoning.
