I just hear from friends once and a while that I'm involved in some "controversy" on X and just laugh because I haven't been on there in like two years. Delighted that I live rent free in so many minds though.

It is now one of the biggest facts in the world that the richest man in the world is an overt white supremacist trying to bend politics worldwide in the direction of white supremacy. Twitter isn't the source of his wealth but it is his biggest megaphone.

It's different for people whose livelihood depends on eyeball counts and I have *never* criticized a working journalist or freelance writer for maintaining an active presence there. But for everyone else? "The conversations are more fun so I generate free content to feed Elon Musk's business"?

I am way too online for my own good, and I had an unreasonably large twitter following, and I really *enjoyed* twitter for a lot of years, and yet leaving there and never looking back was maybe the easiest what-felt-like-a-big-ethical decision I've ever made.

is there anyone thinking/writing about the actual mechanics of disentangling the US government from elon musk?

He still needs to be prosecuted for voter bribery, and it's still the case that his exposure there is to state and not just federal charges. I'm sure there are plenty of other plausible charges, but that's the most obvious and unambiguously public straight-to-jail thing he's done.

Yeah John Gruber came over here to get hate clicks and I’m just helping by sharing but seriously can you pretend you care that Elon Musk helped destroy our democracy and personally consigned millions of the global poor to die

Congrats I guess. Enjoy feeding Elon’s CSAM generator your data. Instead of actually using your position of influence to help push more of a defection, you’re declaring victory for X and acting like it’s diagnosis rather than exactly the kind of thing that produces the reality.

"The thinkers that Fukuyama so admired might have thought little or nothing of his own humanity. Those who come after him may use his theoretical oeuvre in similar ways: in ways that he did not fully intend, or would not fully endorse. That is, after all, human." Liberal Currents keeps delivering!

@aselrod.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:27 PM

Eh I mean that keeps the conversation going. And I think it’s a bit of a morass. You need to really have a hard one-two and move on

@aselrod.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:26 PM

Yeah I mentioned that ad back in my dirtbags essay. Andrews is not a great candidate

Beshear’s basic response is in two parts 1. All children are God’s children and therefore shouldn’t be bullied or singled out 2. Government doesn’t need to get involved in regulating sports stuff that can be handled by local teams, schools, and communities

@aselrod.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:20 PM

I don’t actually think Dems should feel like they have to answer these attacks at all. Rs and Trump are in the toilet with the public. They’ve tanked the economy and launched an unpopular war.

But I continue to think Beshear has nailed the answer here:

@aselrod.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:16 PM

Look, Andrews beating Graham would be an unequivocally good thing for America. But I’ve been wobbly on her from early on. I didn’t like the attack ad she ran on Lindsey when he was alive that amounted to “lol he’s in the closet.” So I’ve just never been too impressed with her instincts.
