2°C by 2040.

That's where the trend lands if warming keeps running at its post-2011 rate of 0.39°C a decade. The CMIP6 climate models in this chart land there too

We're crossing 1.5°C as we speak: 2024 cleared it, 2026 will too, and next year's record #ElNino points at 1.7°C

October 14, 1974 – UK Chief Scientific Advisor is warned about carbon dioxide build-up.

allouryesterdays.info/2022/10/13/o...

On this day, October 14 in 1974, a UK Cabinet Office civil servant tells his boss about this climate change issue, after having been told about it by German Professor Hermann Flohn.

“The first example I have found of this route is in 1974. Dr P.T. Warren, a Cabinet Office civil servant, reported a conversation to Dr Robert Press [Robert Press], who was the acting chief scientific adviser between April 1974 and 1976. Warren had been at a meeting examining the forces shaping Europe over the next 30 years (Lord Kennet’s Europe plus Thirty project[Europe Plus 30]). There, he had spoken with Professor Hermann Flohn, a respectable climatologist from Bonn and one of the leading researchers into anthropogenic climate change. Flohn clearly impressed on Warren the necessity of taking the subject seriously.

Warren told Press:

“His organization has now achieved a ‘reasonable’ model for world climate and this leads to some very worrying predictions when data are fed in on the present output of CO2 into the atmosphere. As I understood him, and I should add that he is no over-zealous enthusiast of the doom-watch school but fully aware of all the limits to modelling, the dangers of premature judgements etc, there is a real likelihood that by the year 2100 the polar ice-caps will disappear if the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere continued at its present rate.”

TNA CAB 164/1379. Warren to Press, 14 October 1974

Agar 2015
[The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 327.28ppm. At time of writing it was 421ishppm- but for what it is now, well, see here for the latest.]

The context was this – in the aftermath of the 1972 Stockholm conference, more work was afoot about climate modelling (the July-August workshop in Wijk had just happened).

Am reading E.J. Swift's novel "When There Are Wolves again." I found the first chapter irritating, but I persisted and omfg am glad I did. It is very very good indeed, and worth yr time (review to follow). Meanwhile, am learning lots of words, include siskin. This planet is freakishly beautiful

We're *so* fucked. Sorry 2b all Anglo-Saxon abt it, but this is proper "canary in the coal-mine" stuff. A certain worldview led us to ravage, exploit & assume we were better, immune from the consequences of our actions. Some Fucked Around and now all are Finding Out that actions have consequences.

For almost 40 yrs fossil-fuel exporting states (inc. the settler colony "Australia") have done their best to water down the science, intimidate the scientists. Now, trying to delay a report until after a "crucial" (ymmv) COP.

@fionaharvey.bsky.social reports

Scientists are coming under pressure from some petro-states and major developing countries to delay publication of a key global report on the climate, despite pleas from vulnerable countries worried that postponement could spell disaster for them.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the UN-convened body of the world’s leading climate scientists, is meeting this week in Addis Ababa to discuss its seventh assessment report, a comprehensive survey of all that is known about the climate crisis.

The report, known as AR7, was scheduled to appear in 2028 in time for deliberations at the UN climate summit, Cop33, late that year. Cop33 is scheduled to critique governments’ actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris agreement target of limiting temperatures to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

“The latest data shows the temperature rise at the heart of El Niño in the Pacific Ocean has now reached 3.05C. That is higher than the 3.02C set in late November 2015, the previous high set in the 150 years of modern records. This temperature is measured against the average of 1991-2020.” #auspol
