So.......how the hell did the New York Times get Australia's AI data centre story so wildly wrong?
Albanese's new AI rules **WORSEN** their position by allowing more room for gas
Check out my new piece at @thepointau.bsky.social for all the lovely, gory details
Take this seriously, because there were a lot of people laughing at the idea of the absurd fossil gas boom in the US that's literally under construction right now.
And for the love of god please stop treating Anthropic like they're the Good Ones™
I think there's a lot of climate and energy people in Australia who'll laugh this off as impossible but the tech economy is not logical and renewables being cheap does not shave a single joule of enthusiasm for tech's seething desperation for fossil fuels right now.
The site of one of Australia’s very first wind farms now shows little evidence of ever having hosted turbines, as work continues on returning the decommissioned project to its natural landscape

Basically: on-site gas concentrates the impacts into an acute, often unjust / inequitable spread of impacts, and the grid spreads it more evenly, but also to a larger number of people
They definitely don't get enough scrutiny for the Bitcoin mining stuff either
And this Reddit thread
Good @volberg.bsky.social thread I wish I'd seen earlier!
Important question: is the Firmus guy "the Elizabeth Holmes of data centres" or "the Pete Evans of data centres"
you see, it's all a climate metaphor (gotta regulate disinfo but also gotta build up good info)
thank you!!
Standard 'this is not peer-reviewed yet' warning, but this looks v fascinating: air pollution deaths for data centres, off-grid-gas vs grid-connecting consumption
They found grid power for xAI's Colossus sites is *WORSE* in absolute terms (!)
Am now getting AI slop pitches meant for the other Ketan Joshi (Author)
'stuff like this' - not 'this'. Notably the site above is off-grid gas !
I'm concerned that both the off-grid and grid-connected gas build-out are being under-calculated and under-considered as threats to fossil fuel elimination, in considerations of that legislation
The yellow line in this chart is AS13238 - YANDEX, the site that I think was hit. But I'm struggling to see how - it has significantly affected all Russian 'bot activity' - Whether this Cloudfare page measures disinfo / fake account sock puppets or something else (is it measuring crawlers?)
This is one of the first sources I could find
I don't know, it's just really hard to get any actual sense of scale here
If a permitting reform bill enables a huge amount of transmission lines, what does that itself enable? Which industry has the power, influence and cash to rush into that new void the fastest? If it's data centres, will that new demand be met with truly additional new renewable energy?
Just a thought on the US permitting reform debate: Too much confidence in "more transmission lines = more emissions reductions", in the context of rapid data centre growth
Noting transmission is a bottleneck for DCs as much as it is for renewables.......
is there any good, trustworthy information out there on the actual impact on bot / disinfo activity as a result of the data centre attacks in Russia? Seeing a lot of pixely screenshots but not a lot of links to primary sources or actual analyses
It has been really, really, eye-opening to learn from the folks opposing Google's data centres in vizag (Visakhapatnam). You can feel how it plugs into the wider political context in India. These activists are brave beyond belief
