Coverage of American authoritarianism with a focus on legal cases. An American-Irish in Limerick, Ireland. Legendary potty mouth!

Note which states are not on this list: WI, where he was just referred for prosecution for bribing voters, GA, where he broke election law in 2024, and AZ, where there are several lawsuits against him pending. He's an election criminal, and this should be hung around the GOP.

As you read all the explanations for Kevin Warsh's faceplant the other day (this is from @pkrugman.bsky.social), remember that Warsh is the one person--aside from JD--that Trump would have a really hard time firing. paulkrugman.substack.com/p/the-bond-m...

On Wednesday Kevin Warsh, who Donald Trump selected as Fed chair, played the starring role. His job was to explain why the Fed didn’t raise rates in the face of inflation that is persistently well above its 2 percent target.

By all accounts he bombed. In particular, the bond market, the ultimate reviewer, really didn’t like Warsh’s performance. As the chart at the top of this post shows, the 30-year Treasury rate spiked and the dollar fell slightly. In plain English, this was the equivalent of bond market traders running for the exits.

Why did, all of a sudden when it came down to YOUR agency, did you shift the focus of politics? The reason their TV ads don't work is the same reason you bear some responsibility here, bc TV is not where you do politics.

@emptywheel.bsky.social

I'm not. You got multiple facts wrong. Maybe you're just happy to mouth off about shit you don't know about. But yet AGAIN, you confess the battle was political. Your job. Not DOJ's. And you failed.

@emptywheel.bsky.social

One can be and often is both. I do now know whether Maggie and Swan do this intentionally. I suspect they come to it from different places. I do know they are exceptionally talented narrativists in a way that helps Trump in many ways.

@emptywheel.bsky.social

I'm not being angry. I'm pointing out that you are admitting your own failures. Objective fact. In YOUR view, which is based on fantasy misunderstandings, a special counsel should have been selected right away. Doesn't change your confession the big fight was about politics, not law.

@emptywheel.bsky.social

WOWOWO. Thank you for acknowledging WHY DOJ added a person who replicated existing work at DOJ, and made it far harder to approve certain things. But how does that absolve you for your admitted failures?

@emptywheel.bsky.social

Let me make VERY clear for those following this and related threads. Maggie Haberman works her ass off and gets info we would not otherwise get. She is also an exquisitely talented author of narratives, just like any novelist. That's my training: Narrative. Who do you see. Who don't you see.

Here's one of the first moments of grotesque dishonesty. Bill Barr CONTINUED the object of impeachment, framing Hunter and Joe Biden, while it was going on. Trump turned on Barr, but not for another year. And hiding that hides his first term abuse.

Three paragraphs.

The first talks about Trump's impeachment acquittal.
The next talks about revenge against witnesses.
The third talks about being "fed up" with people including Barr.
@emptywheel.bsky.social

Well, let's see. Bc rule of law takes time. Rich people have good lawyers. This is all very adjacent to the First Amendment, which we'd like to preserve. Should I continue? Please don't be naive and instead focus on what YOU can do about it.

@emptywheel.bsky.social

This is the first passage of Maggie and Swan's book. Consider the agency it sets up. Democrats. Partisanship. Why not focus on the "irony" that Maggie had done propaganda for the man for years? Why make this about Democrats, rather than her complicity?

THe opening passage of Haberman and Swan's book. it focuses on Democrats.
