In Aotearoa it is Māori language week. Sharing this whakataukī that informs my work as a family historian. I try to honour my tūpuna. These wāhine navigated the challenges of colonisation in te reo Māori (their mothers' language) and in English (their fathers). #familyhistory #whakapapa #ngaitahu

Poster for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) 14–20 September 2026 with the whakataukī (proverb) “Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua,” which translates loosely to 'I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on the past'. A note saying this whakataukī inspires the Zoe's work, and is a way of honoring her ancestors. Includes two framed ancestor portraits, and a 'The Family Archives' logo.

To age is a beautiful privilege, and one denied to many. Having photographs across the lifespan of some of my Māori ancestors is a real taonga. This wāhine had lost five of her 11 children by the time she died in her 70s. #familyhistory #genealogy #aotearoa #whakapapa #archives

Triptych showing three portraits of the same woman at young, middle and elderly ages, with the headline "To age is a beautiful privilege," a caption naming her as the poster's 3x great-grandmother Emma Simon (nee Thomas) with life dates 1853–1932, and a teal "The Family Archives" logo.
