THE ONLY REASON #USSTEEL BOUGHT #STELCO WAS TO SHUT IT DOWN.

Steel is dead. Be REASONABLE. We desperately need new, light industry. Make drugs, lure a humanities Uni to the east end, convert to metal recycling. But do something ELSE.

President Trump just announced the largest steel plant in U.S. history is coming to Iowa — a $15 billion Mesabi Metallics mega-mill that will create 1,750 permanent jobs and thousands more in construction. It will produce up to 10 million tons of 100% American steel a year.

#UnionOrganizing and #strikes frequently work but setbacks and failures abound as well. In 1919 on #ThisDayInHistory the #GreatSteelStrike was launched by an #AFL coalition of 24 #unions fighting to unionize #USSteel. Sadly, the insufficiently radical effort collapsed in January.
