My last #urbangeology walk for this year with London Walks! This walk, around the city of london on Saturday is booked up on the website, but there ate often a few no shows, so there’s always spaces for a few people to turn up on the day! www.walks.com/our-walks/ge...

A flyer for the walk with a photo of the Guildhall Gallery. Text reads Geology and Building Stones in the City of London
Meet at 2.30 pm at Bank Station Exit 1

#urbangeology of the century on the Finchley Road, north London 🧵

Sicilian (Etna) basalt is also used in the building. The whole surface is coated with a wash that has oxidised the surface producing a skim of red ochre. I love this building and it’s the future! Build with stone! #urbangeology

View looking up the north side of the building which shows the minimal finish on the blocks. Some beams have been honed to a smooth surface, others still show the channels cut to house the explosives used to split block in the quarry. Half way up the building is a beam with minimal dressing. Another vertical perspective looking up the building.

This is the Black Castle (Arnos Castle) in Bristol built c. 1750 from blocks of cast slag from copper smelting works. Visited by Horace Walpole, it doesn’t get more gothic than this! And they serve snakebite and black #urbangeology #gothic #18thCentury

Do drop in to @geolsoc.bsky.social for today’s open house! See the Mary Anning portrait, the William Smith map and I’ve put together a tour of the stones used in the interior. The Geol Soc gents toilets are pretty special in the world of #urbangeology! 😉

#FossilFriday! 😀 Part 3 of fossils on the University of Alabama campus‼️See these two oval shapes? These are corals from the Bangor Limestone (~325 million years old) used in building stone near the Rodgers Library. Lots of other shell hash too. #paleontology #fossil #snail #urbangeology

Just about to start my penultimate #urbangeology walking tour for this year! There will be one more in October but then I’ll be taking a break to do other things (although I might sneak one or two into the schedule in early January). Booking and info at www.walks.com/our-walks/ge...

A view of the Royal Exchange Plaza in the city of London on a sunny Saturday. Old buildings in Portland stone have glass and steel skyscrapers rising above them.
