It’s #NationalPoetryDay somewhere. I’m in. #TodaysPoem is from Rubies, the 20th anniversary chapbook. This one by Claudia Coutu Radmore was a sternum jab in the best sense. too early for #SmallPoemSunday?

by CLAUDIA COUTU RADMORE

the squirrel an egg and turning over

an older squirrel perches on the railing
gnawing on a peanut in the blizzard

I turn from the window to check
my egg poaching in its simmering

water and when I nudge it, it turns over
and suddenly you're here at only two

weeks old and your uncle Carl is
visiting surprised that you so seldom

cry, amazed that at only two
weeks old
you've rolled from your tummy onto

your back and now Uncle Carl is gone and you are gone
How can you not be

here asking about the squirrel with no
ears? soon the old squirrel will be gone

and how in your last sweet years you
looked so much like your uncle CarlRubies, with image of pomegranate by Dion Prints
