Thin sections (~30 μm) under crossed polars let us read minerals inside an opaque rock — quartz extinguishes every 90°.

Andalusite thin section in cross-polarized light. Faint chiastolitic (is that an adjective?) inclusion trails link the corners of the crystal. From an unknown locality, in our teaching collection.
