Cllr BoothKing's Theatre Public Realm Improvement project update
Alongside the re-opening of the refurbished King’s Theatre, the public realm improvement project led by the City of Edinburgh Council has also been successfully delivered.
The project, developed by the Council in collaboration with external partner organisations to deliver a wide range of improvements, primarily included:
•
The reconfiguration of the pavement area outside the King’s Theatre, enabling equitable step free access ‘from street to seat’ for all patrons and visitors to the theatre via the main entrance;
•
The reallocation of c.100m2 of underused road space to pavement in an area of high pedestrian demand;
•
The renewal of the Leven Steet pavements with Caithness stone, from the King’s Theatre junction to Glengyle Terrace and Gillespie Crescent;
•
Pedestrian and cycle improvements to the Valleyfield Street at Leven Street junction;
•
Street furniture rationalisations and removals for the benefit of all pavement users; and
•
Renewal of sections of the carriageway on Leven Street to rectify road defects.

The project has also futureproofed the area around the theatre prior to further walking, wheeling and cycling improvements being delivered by subsequent phases of the Meadows to Union Canal project. It should be noted that in conjunction with the removal of the theatre’s refurbishment site compound, Tarvit Street has been permanently closed to general traffic by the introduction of a modal filter that permits cycle access in both directions and loading access for the King’s Theatre. In addition, the nearby one-way street exemptions for people cycling, implemented while Tarvit Street was closed during the refurbishments works, have also been made permanent and will be retained.
