Context: Led by an Angolan named Jemmy, a band of 20 slaves organized a rebellion on the banks of the Stono River. After breaking into a store & armed w/ guns, called for their liberty. Overseers were killed & reluctant slaves forced to join.

The #StonoRebellion, beginning #ThisDayInHistory in 1739, was the largest #SlaveRevolt in a British mainland colony. #Slaves in #SouthCarolina marched under a "#Liberty!" banner, seized weapons, burnt plantations on the way to #SpanishFlorida, and killed 23 colonial militiamen.
