Bit late to today's #MinCup26 party - but no contest for my vote. #Stichtite has layers (like an onion, like an ogre) and is full of interesting structural points. #Quartz is just... well Quartz, nothing doing here.

Image representing the crystal structure of quartz- here red spheres represent oxygen atoms, and blue spheres/polygons represent silicon atoms. The structure has been expanded over b axis to show off quite how really basic it is. Yes it is piezoelectric, but don't let that sway you. The representation is drawn in VESTA from entry #789 in the American mineralogist databaseImage representing the crystal structure of stichtite - here red spheres represent oxygen atoms, orange spheres/polygons represent magnesium atoms , light blue spheres/white represent carbon atoms (that make up CO3 carbonate groups) and pink spheres represent hydrogen atoms. The problem with running a #MinCup26 competition at your library is sometimes you have to enter a vote contrary to what you want. I just put in my patrons' choice of #Stichtite, effectively canceling out my own vote for #Quartz. Bah humbug. (But really, I am delighted that patrons are engaging!)

It's fascinating learning about unusual minerals like #stichtite but good 'ol #quartz is so fundamental to geology that it has my vote in #MinCup26 go #TeamQuartz!

ngl I'm voting #Stichtite to get back for what happened to #Asagiite (also, it's kinda cool in its own right—just like asagiite!)

#MinCup26 #Quartz is super common and is an irritating end to a day at the beach. Vote #Stichtite, it's rare and soft - it would never make your Speedo crunch like Doritos.

#MinCup26 Round 2 Match 4
Both colourful yet opposite in almost every other way, it’s abundant and hard #Quartz against rare and very soft #Stichtite.

My library and I have cancelled each other out today for #MinCup26. I voted for #Talc; my patrons went for #Stichtite (albeit by a slim margin).

Today it's #Talc against #Stichtite at #MinCup26 😻 This is easy for us Talc is representating the fluffy end of the Moths scale that measures the hardness of a #mineral 🙀😹
Being fluffy is one of the supaw powers of #cats
So #DoesItCat ? YES🐾
#PawForScale #geologywithcats

Micas paw as scale for a tiny piece of Talc

As an Aussie, I better get parochial and vote #Stichtite! 😜

@aletamosquito.bsky.socialSep 8, 2026, 4:31 AM

Wow, #Stichtite looks so pretty, but I had to vote for #Talc, because of its importance in soapstone. I have to wonder if stichtite ever shows up in soapstones too?

The baby powder gifs are vile, so I guess it’s #Stichtite tonight

What's up with so many similar minerals being put up against each other in #MinCup26? Today we have #Stichtite taking on #Talc - both layered with magnesium units making up one of the layers. Stichtite a little confused where it's carbonate should go - so today's vote is for ordered talc!

I'm voting #Stichtite in #MinCup26! This member of the layered double hydroxide family is part of a crystal-chemical story with consequences for catalysis, medicine and ion exchange. Learn more in Richardson's @actacrystb.iucr.org work: journals.iucr.org/b/issues/201...

#Stichtite for me.

1. I touched talc in intro mineralogy and hated it. I can still feel the greasy-waxy-whatever, it was awful.
2. It's purple!
3. It dresses up serpentines, playing off those greens and yellows nicely!
4. I bet it doesn't feel like talc! (FYI, powder doesn't give me the wiggins.)
