Today on the blog, my final post for #SpinsterSeptember โOn the whole it seems to be English women who don't marry.โ (Barbara Pym, Less Than Angels) madamebibilophilerecommends.co.uk/2026/09/29/o...
Today on the blog, a post for #spinsterseptember: โAs a psychologist she began to suspect she was a very good teacher of French.โ (Josephine Tey, Miss Pym Disposes) madamebibilophilerecommends.co.uk/2026/09/23/a...

I need more people talking about Katherine Brooke this #spinsterseptember!
So I wrote an entire blog post about her: www.theamericanspinster.com/spinster-sep...
With thanks to @pear-jelly.bsky.social for starting this discussion. ๐ฅฐ

Miss Abby Fitch-Martin, by Kataryn Loughlin (1952). A fascinating portrait of a Puritanical monster who did everything she could to deny material and emotional comfort to her orphan nieces. Grim but gripping.

Here are a few thoughts on High Rising by Angela Thirkel, 1933, for #SpinsterSeptember where a spinster is accused of trying to marry her boss, I really enjoyed this one ๐๐ #BookSky https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/c8269f77-78e9-4e93-b38d-329d9fa4fa27
Also lovely to catch up @madamebibi.bsky.social for some #SpinsterSeptember book chat - and maybe some options for @kaggsy59.bsky.social & @stuckinabook.bsky.socialโs #1949Club.

'โฆshe was conscious only of her seething resentment at the way she had been treated earlier in the evening. At the way she had been met and greetedโLady Rushford had shown more interest and enthusiasm for Reenie [a new maid]..' #SpinsterSeptember #BookSky ๐๐
Not only a great spinster book, but a very autumnal kind of book. Perfect for this time of year. #SpinsterSeptember
We love that Turtle Diary made @jacquiwine.bsky.social's list for #SpinsterSeptember! With a beautiful mini-review of the book.
"... as Hobanโs narrative unfolds, their lives become inextricably entwined, setting up the premise for this marvellous story. An unexpected gem tinged with sadness."
'She had never been able to make up her mind which she disliked most: Mr Billingsโs distasteful remarks and perpetual patience-playing, Mr. Howlandโs flowing phrases and comfortable complacency, or the political opinions of Mr Lorellei...' #SpinsterSeptember
Hooray! I very much hope you enjoy it. :) #SpinsterSeptember
New on the blog today, my thoughts on THE GENTLEWOMEN by Laura Talbot.
I enjoyed this merciless portrait of a monstrous character. It's a cautionary tale of the dangers of delusion and spitefulness towards others - a great choice for #SpinsterSeptember! ๐๐
'Heather always said it had been a mistake, this rushing to make a home for Tom when Laura died. If it hadnโt been for her doing this, Tom might have married again, probably would have done, seeing the way women went after the clergy.' #SpinsterSeptember ๐๐
Excellent. A great choice for #SpinsterSeptember!
Isn't it just?
Also, do you know about @pear-jelly.bsky.social's #SpinsterSeptember reading event? I think this probably qualifies as a spinster-themed read!
My thoughts on Brookner's LOOK AT ME are here, if they're of interest to anyone reading this thread:

From the archive for Janet McNeill, #BornOnThisDay in 1907, my thoughts on TEA AT FOUR O'CLOCK.
A tragic story of familial obligations, ulterior motives and longstanding guilt. Brilliantly observed, it's also ideal for #SpinsterSeptember #BookSky ๐๐
Miss Flavia Grundy. Rumoured (Emmaโs mother had told her) that Miss G. had once written a romantic historical novel, but it was never spoken of. A rather sad character. London high-church goer dumped in the country... #BookSky ๐๐ #SpinsterSeptember
