What scares an archivist? Over the years, the Southwest Collection has found all sorts of nasty things. Mold can digest paper and photographs, weakening their structure. There are also a variety of insects that can cause damage, including roaches.

For the start of Spooky Month, we would like to share some liminal spaces within the archive. A liminal space is an uncanny or surreal space, associated with passage or temporary use. These corridors serve as passages for Southwest Collection archivists.

In 2006, Kinky Friedman, a singer-songwriter and columnist for Texas Monthly, ran for governor as one of two independent candidates in the 2006 Texas gubernatorial election. These posters are from his 2006 campaign for governor.

U.V. Blake TV and Radio Service started as a radio repair shop (on 10th Street in Lubbock) and gradually expanded into TV and other audio equipment. These images show a PA horn (donated by Charles Bucy) that sat on top of the store.

During the vinyl manufacturing process, a copy is made, called the stamper, that has ridges (positive) instead of grooves. The stamper can then be used to make the actual vinyl records.

Pictured are two metal vinyl stampers, each representing a side of the final record.

16 magazine was a teen magazine founded in 1958 by George Winters. In this August 1960 issue, Barbara Hearn, 16 Magazine’s staff writer, interviewed Elvis Presley in Germany, asking him forty intimate questions.
