At the end of the Edo period the 5th head of Sasaya, Ibee (笹屋伊兵衛), was asked by an acquaintance from Tō-ji (東寺) to come up with a snack for the temple monks.
Ibee struck upon the idea of using one of the unused gongs as a makeshift hotplate for his new creation.
