The boundaries have broken down between culture and science. There is pushback on AI reuse but John Willbanks reminds us that the Budapest OA agreement 25 years ago explicitly specified re-use by machines. We should see this as a good thing and not say "but not like that" #SageAssembly
@karthik.io: #Openscience has been building standards and norms in research over a long period of time. While AI has ignored this and sucked everything in – we should not ignore the past. LLMs are collapsing attribution, but this could be an opportunity to reclaim ownership. #SageAssembly
Final Panel at #SageAssembly: The Role of Boundary Spanners. Plan for this track is to connect the previous discussions on technology and the social contract – as this requires boundaries, and we are ripping down fences. Great line-up of perspectives including @kaythaney.bsky.social + @karthik.io
Interesting question to the #SageAssembly verification panel: is #openscience going up or down? Previously there was so much friction in making things open that new tools can drastically lower. But all data repositories are getting hammered by bots and are forced to put up cloudflare.
Useful advice from Jason: "agents are stupid". LLMs aren't the problem, the problem is the harness. Prompting is mostly cognitive offloading and the end product is AI slop. We need to use AI as editors of where you want to explore, naturally document, use to accelerate and not deflate #SageAssembly
Pretty wild talk from Jason Lanier, starting by talking about the extraordinary self importance of the AI industry and “nerdiverse” culture. Worrying it’s all going a bit People’s Temple (Jonestown) #SageAssembly
Suzanna Fox appealing to the audience to act as champions to move patients in the quadrants of suffering into new innovations and moving them to scale #SageAssembly #SageAssembly26
Amazing examples of patient-led healthcare from Suzanna Fox. I didn’t know the Black Panther Party in the 70’s set up the first Sickle Cell Anemia testing and data repository in the US because of government inaction. I really need to read @kevinadavies.bsky.social new book on this #SageAssembly
Stephen Friend (co-founder @sagebio.bsky.social) now giving some remarks. Things have changed so much since the last #SageAssembly has changed so much, the data landscape is much less utopian now and focussed on tools
Barend Mons was always pushing the concept of Data FAIR-Ports so it seems appropriate the @Sagebio #SageAssembly seems to be hosted in a ferry terminal
Good morning #sageassembly @sagebio.bsky.social
Now off to Seattle for #sageassembly run by @sagebio.bsky.social
