As stranded passengers sat grounded for hours, Gander swung into action. Schools, community centers, and churches transformed into shelters. Locals cooked massive hot meals, set up makeshift beds, and opened their private homes so strangers could shower and sleep. #OperationYellowRibbon

Americans will be forever grateful to the people of Gander, who opened their homes and hearts to 6,122 passengers and 473 crew members of diverted flights on Sep 11. Love and logistics got it done. #OperationYellowRibbon 🇨🇦

On 9/11, let us not forget how the Canadians reacted. There was Operation Yellow Ribbon, where 33,000 Americans in 224 planes landed at 17 airports across Canada. At Canadian Forces Base Gander in Newfoundland, 38 planes with 6,600 people were taken in.

Thank you, Canada 🇨🇦 for Operation Yellow Ribbon. This is what great neighbors do for each other, and this Minnesotan remembers.
#OperationYellowRibbon #Sept11 #Gander

Understandably tiny Gander in Newfoundland is most remembered for hosting stranded passengers on 9/11 when US airspace closed - but both Vancouver BC and Halifax NS actually hosted more unexpected guests that day #operationyellowribbon

🙏🏾 And God bless those who opened their arms, their homes, and their communities to strangers, who became friends, who became family, who this 80 year old man is trying to divide.

As neighbours, as friends, as allies, as family, WE ARE ALL BETTER THAN HIM. #OperationYellowRibbon 💛 proves that.

🙏🏾🇨🇦🇺🇸

#OperationYellowRibbon 💛 saw some 240 planes fly across, what has been described by the current POTUS as an “artificial line,” into a sovereign nation that dropped all formality, all protocols, and procedures to welcome Americans and their tourists into the arms of safety, shelter and food.
