“It was an honour to return to Leicester to mark the third #NSMD. This is where, three years ago, we planted our first memorial tree with our friends from Doctors in Distress, and it was incredibly moving to see how it has grown alongside the day itself." - Dr Helen Garr, Medical Director

"You are worthy of joy." This #NSMD, help us to create a supportive community within the healthcare workforce care by sharing a positive message with a colleague - let them know that you appreciate them💚

If you are struggling and you read this, please put aside your darkest thoughts and know that you are valued, you are worthy of joy, that there are people who care and that help is at hand.

To mark #NSMD, NHS Practitioner Health and Doctors in Distress attended an event at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester. At this event, Dr Helen Garr announced the launch of the Wall of Remembrance, an online memorial for health and care workers who have died by suicide: bit.ly/PHWallOfReme...

“We talk about suicide in numbers. Approximately one doctor dies by suicide every three weeks, and one nurse dies by suicide every week. Those statistics are shocking. But behind every single number is a person. A colleague. A friend. A parent. A son or daughter. A husband, wife or partner. Someone who sat next to somebody in the staff room. Someone who made somebody laugh on a terrible shift. Someone who noticed when a patient was frightened and stayed with them for another five minutes. Someone who taught a student. Someone who held a hand. Someone who made a difference.”

As part of this year's #NSMD theme, #LastingMemoriesBuildingHope, we have launched a wall of hope - an online space to share words of hope, support, and reasons to stay. Visit the wall of hope here: bit.ly/PHWallOfHope

Today, we have launched a webpage dedicated to sharing messages of hope with health and care workers who are struggling with their mental health, or dealing with suicidal thoughts. This space has been created for people to share words of hope, support, and reasons to stay. Words from colleagues, friends, patients, family members, and others who care.We hope that those reading these messages will be reminded that they are not alone, they are cared from, and that others have been in similar positions and have come out the other side.Wall of Hope

While #NSMD is a time to remember and honour all those who have lost their lives, we also want to reflect on the experiences of those working in forensic and legal medicine, and the emotional toll the work carries

If you can't see a way out, please know that there is always someone willing to help and support you. Today, take that first step and tell someone you're struggling - speak to a friend, loved one, colleague, manager, healthcare professional, or call a mental health helpline. You're not alone. #NSMD

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming. You might feel stuck, exhausted or unsure how things could possibly get better. But you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

Talking to someone and asking for help can be difficult, especially when you’re used to looking after everyone else. But taking that first step can make a difference. Whatever you’re facing right now, things can change. There are people who care and there is hope.

You don’t have to go through it alone. Take that first step and talk to someone.

TW: Suicide. "There's no shame in struggling." Dr Benji Waterhouse's message of hope provides a much needed reminder that health and care workers are human, and can struggle with their mental health too. Don't let feelings of shame prevent you from getting the help you need. #NSMD

Increasingly, healthcare workers are expected to do impossible jobs. But we’re mere mortals, not superhumans.
During the darkest periods of my career, I sometimes wondered if suicide was the solution. Instead, I got support, had therapy, and changed my working life. Things got better.
There’s no shame in struggling. Please ask for help. I hope the future you will be glad you did.
Dr Benji Waterhouse

Let this message encourage you to take the first step - reach out to a loved one, friend, or a healthcare professional, and let them know that you are struggling. You are not alone. #NSMD #LastingMemoriesBuildingHope Submit a message of hope here- bit.ly/NSMD26

Message of Hope: Reaching out is often one of the hardest things to do. But it is the most important thing. Please hear me say you don’t have to carry this alone and that many of us have felt hopeless, felt fear and pain too. You can share how you feel and be heard without judgement, and have relief at being understood and connected. Take the brave step to ask for help. - Mary Jane Roberts, CEO, Doctors in Distress
