Yesterday was the last sunny day on this side of October... Today, temperature dropped 20 degrees and snowstorm is looming. #pnw #northcascades #nature

Had an amazing day out in the North Cascades (Maple Pass) yesterday. Larches and fire weed were in full autumn color! #pnw #hiking #fallcolors #washington #northcascades #larches

For #TreeTuesday: A few trees on a ridge in the harsh environs of the Mount Baker Wilderness of Washington State, USA. Note the man and his young son in the bottom left, for scale. The background are the lower slopes of Mount Baker.

#Landscapes #NorthCascades #PNW

A relatively barren alpine landscape but with a small cluster of trees on the left side of a gentle slope from right to left in the foreground. 3 of the trees are much taller than the other handful of trees. The background is the rocky slops of a mountain, no vegetation, and a small amount of melted fresh snow and glaciers.

We spent the weekend enjoying the colors of the North Cascades. The larches were stunning!

Easy Pass, North Cascades National Park. We made it to the pass and back. 14 miles round trip. My legs hurt - getting old. I usually do this hike in the spring with snowshoes. #hiking #pnw #northcascadesnationalpark #northcascades

Chasing light through the mist on Sauk Mountain. The switchbacks here never disappoint, even if never ending, especially when the clouds start rolling through the valley. 🌲☁️

A moody mountain perspective along the Sauk Mountain trail, looking out over a sheer green slope as it drops into a misty abyss. Soft sunlight filters through heavy clouds and fog, illuminating the winding footpath and dense fir trees lining the ridge.

The #NorthCascadesHighway has tons of pull offs and it seems like each one of them has a stunning view of the #NorthCascades, a #waterfall, or both. I can't help but fall in love with #washington and this #nationalpark, everytime we come.

And, it's only an hour and a half from Seattle!!

For #TreeTuesday: a photo I made a few years ago about this time of year. A view from a trail in the Mount Baker Wilderness in Washington State, USA. The slopes of Mount Baker (Komo Kulshan) are in the background.

#Trees #Landscape #LandscapePhotography #Nature #NorthCascades

A fir tree without many needles remaining on it sits in the middle of the frame, a hiking trail next to it. On the right is a slope with some blueberry bushes in red leaf foliage, and sunlight is lighting up taller, healthy fir trees on the left. Behind the middle tree is a landscape with very few trees, and the lower slopes of Mount Baker (Komo Kulshan) in the background, some glaciers at the top of the frame. Mount Baker is a volcano, and the surrounding area is at an altitude and environment that normally gets a lot of snow in the winter, so there isn't huge amounts of foliage on the rocks.

Another critter I photographed at North Cascades National Park: Clark's Nutcracker. Though monotone in color, I still find this bird striking.

#birdphotography #northcascades #birds #wildlifephotography

A light grey bird with black wings that have white tips. The bird has a long-ish, pointed black beak and black feet. The same type of bird as in the previous picture, this time perched on the limb of a pine tree.

A really big sky.

A really wild North Cascades landscape.

A really big Ross Dam.

On the weekend of September 11-13, 2026...

Happy Autumn Equinox! πŸ’›It’s that magical time of year when the larches put on a brilliant golden show before shedding their needles for winter πŸ’› #hiking #PNW #northcascades

At North Cascades National Park, I encountered the roundest dang Cascade Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel that I've ever seen. Look at this magnificent creature!

A fat Cascade Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel (Callospermophilus saturatus) viewed from the front. The squirrel's fur is golden-brown with a darker belly. It is sitting on its haunches on a lichen covered boulder and looking to the right of the frame. The same Cascade Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel (Callospermophilus saturatus) viewed from the side. From this angle one of the dark stripes down its back is visible.

Ptarmigan Ridge Trail, seen here in the distance, is one of my all time favorite hikes. Looking forward to getting back up there in a few weeks when the fall colors make the landscape look almost surreal.

#pnw #photography #mountains #hiking #washington #northcascades #landscape #nature

Mount Baker rises above a sprawling alpine basin beneath a low ceiling of gray clouds. Streaks of late-season snow cling to the mountain and surrounding ridges, while rust-colored rock, pale scree, and bands of green meadow break up the rugged terrain below. A faint trail threads across the open slopes before disappearing toward the darker evergreen forest in the foreground.

Mount Shuksan playing hide-and-seek with the clouds again.

#BlueSkyMonday #MountainMonday #pnw #photography #mountains #clouds #landscape #northcascades

Mount Shuksan rises beyond a small mountain lake and dense evergreen forest, its snowfields and jagged dark rock partly swallowed by fast-moving summer clouds. Sunlit firs stand sharply in the foreground while the mountain fades in and out of mist beneath a deep blue sky.
