the heron,
and how he stands in the dark marshes
like a pale spindle..."

A black-and-white wildlife photograph capturing a solitary great egret standing alert in rippling, shallow water. Framed in profile, the bird’s curved, slender neck extends upward, its sharp bill pointed slightly downward as it watches the surface. The plumage displays soft, graded grayscale tones against dark, horizontal bands of water textured with rhythmic swells and reflections. Slender reeds emerge from the water to the left, while the dark legs anchor into the mirror-like reflections below. The high-contrast, nearly monochromatic framing emphasizes stillness, solitary grace, and the clean, sculptural geometry of the bird against the shifting movement of the tide.

I’m somewhat obsessed with this location in Southeast Oregon. This is where hot springs bubble up to the playa surface of Oregon’s Alvord Desert in the shadow of Steens Mountain. The flat surface, high-speed winds, and scalding hot water creates these mesmerizing patterns as various minerals dissolve and get spread around. I love the rich natural colors and how the surface looks different every time I visit.
