Watching the Harvest Moon rise over the lovely Togetsukyō Bridge in Arashiyama.

The nearly full moon (98.8% waxing gibbous) peeked over the mountains, and a few of us waited with anticipation. When it finally appeared, happy cheers rang out—it gave me goosebumps and always feels so magical. Hundreds of years ago, Kyoto’s nobles gathered here to admire the moon and share poetry; I can only imagine their other adventures. No surprise that the bridge is affectionately known as the “Moon Crossing Bridge.”

Jakkō-in, a temple located in Ōhara, Kyoto, was founded by Prince Shōtoku Taishi in 594.

A few pictures from my archives. I visited Jakkō-in (寂光院) in Ōhara, Kyoto. The garden there is beautiful, with ponds and Koi fish. It was well into December, and the autumn leaves had fallen to the ground.
Jakko-in is a renowned temple that once served as the secluded residence of Kenreimon-in Tokuko (1155–1213). Tokuko was the daughter of Taira no Kiyomori (1118–1181), the powerful chief of the Heike clan, and the consort of Emperor Takakura. After the Heike clan's devastating defeat at the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura, where they were crushed by Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159–1189)—the younger brother of the Genji clan chief—Tokuko was rescued from an attempted suicide and found refuge at Jakko-in.
