This is where #TheMab @eloisewilliams.bsky.social @mattbrownwriter.bsky.social did something vital as this isn’t just retelling Welsh folklore but about working with authors who sit in such a space regarding class, race & connectedly national-linguistic-cultural marginalisation #KidsBooksFriday 1/2

A popular choice in these parts but I’d like to spotlight the wonderful Hari Kumar, who is ND, as well as Lizzie Chu who is bold and brave and comes to realise something important about her grandpa… (no spoilers!)

Paperback cover of Hari Kumar, Ultimate Superstar by Rashmi Sirdeshpan, illustrated by Mamta Singh. Hari, a young ou wearing a blue tshirt, black jeans and converse-style shoes, is surrounded by doodles of musical notes, stars and his two friends, Lily and Raheem.Colourful paparrback cover of Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu by Maisie Chan. Lizzie sits astride a giant glitter ball which reflects multiple colours in different directions. At the bottom of the cover are her two friends, a Black boy in jeans and smart green jacket/cardigan, plus an Asian girl in a wedding-style dress with bell sleeves and pink shoes. Caption: Keep trying, keep laughing, keep dancing!

2 great books by neurodivergent authors perfect for mid to upper primary.

@ellemcnicoll ‘s A Kind of Spark is a story of witch trials & living with autism.

Lisette Auton’s The Secret of Haven Point about an ASN community living in a lighthouse with mermaids and so much more

The green version of the cover of A Kind of Spark. Better if reading it to a class as I’ve found pink puts the boys off before you start reading. The cover of The Secret of Haven Point

I used to carry the Read Me book round like a bible when I was teaching KS2. Now in SEMH secondary I often share and get engagement with these. Can’t wait to get copies of Attie Lime’s and Victoria Gatehouse’s new books too! #kidsbooksfriday

I love exploring poetry with children. These books are some of big hits with the classes I’ve had. #KidsBooksFriday

A great favourite in the last school I worked in - it helped having the poet working in a nearby classroom on a daily basis. #KidsBooksFriday

Cover of Where Zebras Go by Sue Hardy Dawson showing a glorious orange and red background and a group of Zebras.

I like @magiccatpublishing.bsky.social's Picture a Poem series (I really hope more are coming, there's another Benjamin Zephaniah as well)! My favourite poetry is either silly (Roger McGough's Imaginary Menagerie) or those novels in verse that pull your heart out through your mouth. #KidsBooksFriday

Hope is the Thing with Feathers by Emily Dickinson, illustrated by Tim Hopgood. Cover is a yellow sky with a brown bird flying across.Rewild by Benjamin Zephaniah, illustrated by Emily Sutton. Colourful cover shows a Black child and a dog standing on a log surrounded by nature.

Many picturebooks have rhyming texts, so could arguably be seen as "poetry". They are really important for developing children's sense of rhythm and rhyme - key pre-reading literacy skills, as well as aiding aural memory. There are oodles of great poetry collections too, though.
