Hoping for a late surge for #Julienite in today's #MinCup26 quarter final. Hard to be up against a tasty opponent like #Halite - but it's structure is just so interesting! Look at those jewel-like blocks of death! (Not a chemist, but sulfur+nitrogen+carbon attached to a metal can't be healthy)

Image representing the crystal structure of julienite - here red spheres represent oxygen atoms, dark yellow spheres/polygons represent sodium atoms, dark blue spheres/polygons represent colbalt atoms, yellow spheres represent sulfur atoms, brown spheres represent carbon atoms and light blue spheres represent nitrogen atoms. The structure is viewed down its c axis and shows that there are sodium/water(oxgyen) units surrounded by colbalt complexes with nitrogen, carbon and sulfur attached. The representation is drawn in VESTA from entry #9760 in the American mineralogist database.

#mincup3 I'm sorry but Halite is the basic bitch of salts. #julienite is pretty, refined, and just didn't get its moment. On a different planet things could have gone differently.

#Julienite is a gorgeous newcomer and deserves this win.

Sorry, my doctor says i need less #halite

#MinCup26 Sodium chloride (aka #halite) is cool because it is transparent to infrared radiation - so it acts like a window for those wavelengths of light. And I know #julienite bumped #calcite (another mineral with a fun relationship with light), but #julienite does seem more interesting. 🤔

#MinCup26 Quarterfinals 3
It's a pair of dissolvable beauties as rare and complicated #Julienite is against ubiquitous and straightforward #Halite.

After removing bot net contamination, despite a smaller margin the results stand with #Julienite continuing to #MinCup26 round 3 over #Putnisite.

Have faith in your mineral. It doesn’t need cheating to win.

#julienite is doing ok. Go #teamjulienite!

@mareetimms.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 10:03 AM

It didn’t make it past round 2. Hoping our WA mineral #Putsinite makes it through in tonight’s vote! Although tough against the stunner in #Julienite!

@ougeolsoc.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 5:45 AM

Attracted by the backstory for #julienite (and as Henri Julien was french, presumably the name is pronounced with a soft "J" ?)
So, vote #teamjulienite in #Mincup26

@ougeolsoc.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 5:42 AM

Like the #julienite backstory, so its a sympathy vote for Henri Julien this time round

Going with #Julienite this round, because I was a grad student, and I now teach grad students on a regular basis so the name of this one hit me right in the feels, y'all. (I'd like to be hard scientific about this stuff but I'm a sociologist. I'm all about the people behind the science.) #MinCup26

Voting #Julienite for #MinCup26! Check out this classic @actacrystb.iucr.org by Cano et al. to see a different cobalt(II) thiocyanate, this one with Co-NCS-Co bridges, and with water molecules and sulfur completing a hydrogen-bond network. journals.iucr.org/paper?S05677...

AUSTRALIA and beyond - We need to assemble again for #Putnisite! This amazing structure needs your support in today's #MinCup26 battle. For shear density and novelty in its strange/wonderful crystal structure it should get your vote over #Julienite

There is also some chromium hiding in the structure that is in part represented by a yellow triangle. #MinCup26 Round 2 Match 5
It's a pair or rare, vibrant minerals with unusual chemistry as purple #Putnisite is up against blue #Julienite.

And it's #julienite with the win, against a juggernaut!

@barrygoldman1.bsky.socialSep 11, 2026, 9:04 PM

I would vote for calcite because I find it locally in so many different situations, but on the other hand ... a thiocyanide mineral? does anybodyy have a reference for where #julienite grows?

@ntumanovxray.bsky.socialSep 11, 2026, 7:25 PM

Yeah, I know- vikings, birefringence, etc for #Calcite, but there is tragic story behind #Julienite and it is connected to Belgium and Congo. And today (by coincidence) I helped a colleague from DRC with analysis of Congolese minerals.

So, #Julienite for today!

#MinCup26

@catwithgeologists.bsky.socialSep 11, 2026, 7:08 PM

Today it's #Calcite against the extremely rare #mineral #Julienite at #MinCup26😻 We vote for calcite in memory of Ornella 🌈 who voted for calcite because of its use as #compass 😻 due to its high birefringence😻

Ornella 🌈 is showing her compass

Go little blue mineral that dissolves into a fleeting pink streak!
#Julienite

Also, don't let the #calcite folks bully you, they dissolve into foam whenever weak acid is near!
