Last chance to vote for #Halite. #StaySalty

@ksircombe.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 9:07 PM

Voting for #halite in #MinCup26 ๐Ÿงชโš’๏ธ because thick layers of halite can be used to store hydrogen as a low carbon fuel! Low permeability so the Hโ‚‚ stays put, large caverns can be created (just add water!) and it has a smaller engineering footprint compared to options on the surface.

Report cover from the Australian Government's Geoscience Australia. The upper portion is a solid teal panel with the Australian Government coat of arms and logo at top left. White text reads "Record 2023/05 | eCat 146489," followed by the large bold title "Feasibility of underground hydrogen storage with salt caverns in the offshore Polda Basin, South Australia." Below the title, the record number is repeated with the authors L. Wang, S. Rees, L. Carr and A. J. Feitz. A footer line reads "Earth sciences for Australia's future | ga.gov.au." The bottom fifth of the cover is a macro photograph of coarse, angular mineral grains in shades of translucent white, cream, pink and rusty orange-brown, scattered densely against a dark background.

Look at what I was treated to today when opening an old Play Doh can we use for our topography lab: halite crystals! The lid was slightly ajar letting evaporation do its thing since February. Halite crystals and hairs grew on thin ridges w/high surface area to volume ratios. Vote #halite!

The hairs are about 3.5mm long and the crystals about 2mm.Macro phone shot of various cubic, hairy and planar halite crystals sticking out of a crusty play doh ball that is black. Do you like noodles? What would cooking noodles be without #halite?

@clairecopperman.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 7:36 PM

Don't be swayed by #Cuprite's pretty looks; #Halite can be just as beautiful and is essential to life. Besides, imagine chips, crisps, or indeed any meal without salt. You've got just under 3 and a half hours to vote: don't delay!

As far as we know, only one of these #MinCup26 contenders has been the subject of recent viral social media, and it gets our vote for inspiring so much interest in world history (and mineralogy too). #Halite! www.instagram.com/reel/Dan1tCe...

@cosmicyote.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 6:27 PM

Gotta go for #cuprite.

The complex crystal shapes look so mesmerizing.

Plus it forms cubes/octahedra so it can look like dice, granted #halite can too! But it can become malachite so turquoise color dice :)

As a (former) New Mexican with Polish roots, I gotta represent and vote for #Halite

@bkania.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 5:23 PM

Ok folks! #Halite is trailing. Yes it is the #Salt of the #Earth, but it is most valuable in our #Ocean s.๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿชผ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‹ Without it our #Friends wouldn't be here. #MinCup26 ##TacoTuesday #FishTacos ๐ŸŒฎ So please ๐Ÿ™ #Vote for #Halite @mineralcup.bsky.social

@janelleshane.comSep 29, 2026, 3:51 PM

It has to be #halite for #MinCup26 !

You can make a laser out of salt droplets - place them on a superhydrophobic surface and the droplets are round and stable, making good laser cavities.

web.archive.org/web/20111018...

Fig. 1 of the linked paper, showing the experimental setup, along with the broad-spectrum glow of the droplet, and the narrow spike of the laser spectrum. In the experimental setup you'll note that it took two lasers (a green one and an infrared one) to get red laser light out of the salt droplet.

That said, #StaySalty and vote #halite for #Mincup26 semi-final! www.mineralcup.org/2026/vote-re...

@kionasmith07.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 2:26 PM

How are we on #MinCup26 semi-finals ALREADY? I voted #Halite, but I've also been team #Cuprite up to this point and won't be sad about either outcome.

@minouette.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 1:25 PM

Either could claim my art vote but of the two #Halite gets my physics vote. Plus itโ€™s hard to quibble with being a necessity of life. Itโ€™s in blood, sweat and tears - and the sea!

And then, thereโ€™s revenge for Orpiment.

So Iโ€™m voting Halite! #MinCup26 #sciart

My โ€œBlood, Sweat and Tearsโ€ lino block print is about how we as people reflect our origins in the ocean. Printed from 8 hand-carved blocks it shows blood cells racing through an artery (top left square), a cross-section of our skin with a sweat gland (middle left square), an eye with a tear (bottom left square) and a section of ocean seawater (vertical rectangle, right side, full height). Halite NaCl is part of all of the above.
@reservatory.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 1:09 PM

Don't forget to vote in #MinCup26 semi-finals! Stay salty, vote #halite!
