At #IWC70 in Hobart, OceanCare brought the welfare of whales to the INTERNATIONAL WHALING COMMISSION. We are deeply concerned about the methods used to kill whales. There is no humane way to kill a whale at sea. But whaling is not only a conservation matter. It is an animal welfare issue. ⚠️ 🐋

After a long debate in Hobart, the proposal for a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic once again failed to gain the necessary three-quarters majority when it was voted on at the 70th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC70).

To our regret, #Switzerland has today withdrawn its resolution on Small Cetacean Directed Takes Linked to Commercial Fisheries at #IWC70. In our view, the withdrawal came too early. We believe the resolution would have found broad support among other Member States. 1/2

🐋 The International Whaling Commission, #IWC70, has already started in Hobart. Today the in total 6 resolutions were presented, including the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary. But one proposal gives us particular cause for concern: the resolution tabled by Antigua and Barbuda. Learn more. 📹👇
