Hooded Vulture

Description in alt.

Ian has set the theme for #BirdOfTheDay as
#Raptors; any bird of prey.

I’m going with this #HoodedVulture photographed at #MuncasterCastle who work in conservation with this endangered species.

A landscape orientated image of a hooded vulture taking off from a tree stump. The stump is in the bottom right corner of the image and the bird is taking off from it going towards the left. His wings are up, his head is jutting out and just the tips of his claws remain in contact with the stump. The backdrop is thrown out of focus by a narrow depth of field.

This vulture is called Mouse and is one of a few at the hawk and owl centre in Muncaster Castle. The centre do great work in helping conserve this amazing species. Vultures are critically endangered, which is a worry as they are an important part of the ecosystem.

Here’s a couple of things Muncaster says about them. Vultures fill a vital ecological niche. They are obligate scavengers – this means they have a diet entirely made up of carrion (dead animals). By consuming a carcass, vultures can eliminate it as a potential harbour for disease and bacteria. Vultures are also an important indicator species – it means that the health of vulture populations is a biological reflection on the health of the ecosystem.
