#OctoberWorldbuilders Suzamna has some less-than-ancient ruins, places that had to be abandoned as they became more and more unlivable and people fled to the capitol, where at least they could find food and shelter (hopefully). Lots of ghost towns in the Empire #GoldenDusk

The closest Islana has ever been to the Golden Dusk itself... at least up to this point in the story ;) #wipsnips #goldendusk

Carefully creaking open the door, she peered out of it to see Aben standing there, one hand on his head as he looked east, toward the new border of dusk. When he heard the door, he lowered his hand and turned toward them, looking relieved to see Berfrid and holding his hands out for his son. “I’m glad you two are alright.”
“He didn’t even know anything was wrong,” Islana assured him, letting little Berfrid snuggle into his father. She stepped around the two of them to get a better view of the Golden Dusk instead of what limited view she’d been able to see from her window. Like a wall of darkness, the glittering gold extended into the forest, imposing but not yet encroaching. Standing outside instead of safely in her home, she could feel the hairs on the back of her neck and arms standing straight up.

Changed "contract" to "deal" because "contract" has some big ol' spoilers. #wipsnips #goldendusk

“Islana.” He didn’t raise his voice, but his voice rang with enough power to stop her voice in her throat. “Do not make excuses for them. They know what kind of creature has made its home in the village now. They hope for spectacle, not a deal. If they were desperate, they would not come in flocks but in the dead of night, hoping to hide the shame of the lengths they must go to.”

Listen, I get a word like "petal," and you have to meet My Boi. #goldendusk #wipsnips

“Why?” The fairy put both hands on his hips. And when Islana hesitated—only to look for the right words to calm him down—he let out an angry noise. “Oh, what a trick! You want something else, yes? You can have. . . .” Somehow, he managed to look like he was tapping his foot against the ground, even though he hung in the air in front of her. “A name! Yes, you mortals like names. But not my real name, no, that is too powerful.” He rubbed his chin. “I will give you a name to call me if you tell me the story. Deal?” He suddenly flew closer to her, nearly touching the space between her eyes, so that she couldn’t focus on him properly. “Well?” He hadn’t given her time to respond.
“Deal,” she said quickly, worried about his temper. This close to him, she could see the way every movement he made left an odd trail of Gold, so that he looked like he had several arms at once whenever he would gesture.
“Good. Call me Petal.” He backed up enough that she could see him without crossing her eyes. “Well?”

Islana's father is terrible. #goldendusk #wipsnips

“While you’re down there, tell Aben that he cannot name his child after your husband. I’m not having it.”
Although Islana had felt the weight of her veil when dealing with people before, the way it obscured her expression and hid the warmth she was trying to give as part of her duties, she found herself relieved that he couldn’t see a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth without her permission. “I hadn’t heard that he’d named his son yet,” she said, hoping her tone was neutral enough not to merit further outrage.
“He has named him Berfrid of Banadarode,” he said, his eyes flashing as he slammed a fist into the table, leaving a sizeable dent at the corner. “It is one thing to steal my son-in-law’s name before his body is cold in the ground but to replace him entirely?”
A million thoughts whizzed through Islana’s head at once. Obviously, the change in surname was enough to keep the town gossips going for months—if not for the fact that the return of magic had, in fact, overshadowed anything that shallow. Perhaps that was why Islana’s father was so upset with all the gawkers going up the mountain. He wanted everyone to be as furious as he was.

#OctoberWorldbuilders The empire directly east of Islana's home country used to be flourishing, but their land is turning more and more arid. Over a hundred years, they've gone from plains to desert... and it's getting worse. #goldendusk

Would you like to see the opening lines of my Golden Dusk series? #wipsnips #goldendusk

Chapter 1: The Veil

For the past two months, Islana had kept the curtains drawn over her windows, allowing herself to sink into literal darkness alongside her own heavy heart. She’d refused any visitors other than her own sister, who made the trek up the gentle but long slope of the hill despite being pregnant, all so she could make Islana eat. Had it not been for Ketlin, she would have wasted away into herself.
But now, Ketlin couldn’t make the journey from the village up to the top of the hill. Now, Islana had no choice but to take care of herself, as much as she dreaded the thought.

Islana meets a "fairy godmother," and it's more unsettling than anything else. #wipsnips #goldendusk

Once again the Godmother gestured for Islana to sit with her. This time, Islana took up the invitation, if only because she knew the Godmother would not stop asking. As soon as Islana had arranged her skirts properly, the Godmother met her gaze. “An Evil Queen has taken control of the lands to your east. Did you not feel the change in the winds before the darkness fell?”
Islana shook her head and gestured to her mourning veil. “I’ve been distracted.”
The Godmother’s expression softened to one that nearly convinced Islana she was human. “I am sorry for your loss.”

I bet you thought "teeth" would have a dragon snippet but nope. I gotta post about my boy Petal. Because I'm in love with this stupid fairy. #goldendusk #wipsnips

The fairy laughed, a strange sound that she knew was laughter but sounded like the warning screech of a bird of prey at the same time. Paired with those glistening teeth, she couldn’t help but take a slight step back. Still, he spun a small circle and landed on his perch again once he’d finished laughing, then said, “I like this deal.”
“Then it’s agreed: five songs for a true story about the Dusk expanding,” Islana said, waiting for his affirmative nod before she knelt back down beside the buttons, casting her mind about for what to sing now that she knew she had an audience. She had never thought much of her voice, and she was suddenly, deeply, self-conscious.
“Why are you not singing?” the fairy demanded.
“I was trying to decide what five songs to sing,” Islana replied. “I’m not used to singing for other people.”
“Then it’s a good thing I’m not a people.”

Petal, my beloved <3 #goldendusk #wipsnips

“You have been asking questions and interrupting my story!” Petal threw up his hands. “No. This is not a good deal. I will tell you what I know about the Great Fae for food, and you will sing for me again if you want more stories.”
Islana tried not to sigh audibly, but some sound still escaped her all the same. “Alright. Deal.”
Petal’s wings fluttered behind him, and he once again flew to be right in between her eyes. “Do you not think this is a good deal? I make good deals!”
