10: In Karnassia (co-created with @jmaxwell-author.bsky.social), societies have different types of competitive sports that reflect the different values of those societies. In Freeport, boat racing, dog racing, and mock combat prevail, while in Hroth, races are by boat or horse…

Sports are not really a thing in the Sedimentary Lands but some people practice fighting by a sort of martial that involves two or more people simulating a fight with staves, to train dexterity and strategy.

Chugata plays a spear- throwing game like badminton. Narakal plays stones and counters reasonably well, which are a bit like chess. The Tsin play a similar game much more seriously to teach kids military tactics, which is why Ysel is beating Narakal in the picture below!

The Akapana's oldest mud-brick temples are little more than crumbling hills from outside, but the rooms inside are so well-preserved temple priests take school trips there every year to teach kids about the bad old days.
Tenan isn't Akapana and he's NOT in his comfort zone.

Fencing is competitive in universe 3
Kaifuro created a new way to duel too.

Duelling 🤺 prohibited the use of battle magic, so it was simply swordplay.
Kaifuro used non battle basic spells in his matches (mostly because he wanted to have a flaming sword). 🪡

The Akapana live in a desert where it very rarely rains, so they're used to preserving water. They have much more of a problem with rain, which overwhelms their canals and reservoirs, ruins their fields and melts their mud-brick houses.

Thanks for the prompt!

Good morning, #OctoberWorldbuilders! What are some of the more competitive sports or games in your fictional world? Are there tournaments? Do people come to watch and cheer for their favorite players? What do you get if you win?

After the great dragon came, his radiation affected the entire landscape, with dread seeping into every plant and animal.

These days, everything that lives within the plague lands has mutated by the dragons presence. With his magic feeding giant mushrooms, most prevalently.

Definitely not a pleasant place to live, I could’ve chosen a nicer desert.

Food is hard to come by, but the dragon Namturs radiation affects every area differently, even promoting plant growth in some, even if those plants are toxic.

Most people have to scavenge to survive.

The plague lands are a brutal hellscape, where survival and habitation are difficult.

Those who do survive exist mostly in the form of nomadic groups, but there are also a few larger settlements and even the semblance of nations left behind after the apocalypse.

9. Board games

Tsentrin's more affluent households often have a Warmages set in the parlour.
Like a combination of chess and Battleship, the players 'buy' then 'deploy' pieces representing different types of mage in order to take over the other's land and tower.

Hello! The Talithans have board games most people would recognize and some they would not. I haven't developed any T. H. boardgames yet, I need to.

Chess, or more specifically a Knight chess piece, plays a role in the first novel.

There's two types of board games. 1/3

There are definitely board games in Gilded Essence, and one of the most popular is a strategy game built around trading, territory, and resource control.

Players move carved pieces across a map, claiming routes and exchanging tokens representing stored magic. The goal is...

Going to hop in because I actually have a chess game in The Wolf Knight. You see The Dream of Rhonabwy, is about a man's fever dream where King Arthur laments the state of Wales while playing "chess".

I'll share an excerpt actually!

An excerpt from The Wolf Knight (Raven & Bear: 8) by Bramble.

Transcript:
“I was wondering actually,” Princess Ceindrych began this match with a patient opener, “P., to d-four. Marrok told me why he wants to be a paladin, but what about you Princess Ata?”

The answer proved unconventional. A pawn pushed to h-five and silence. Thereafter, each established tactic was met by dubious plays. Clouded eyes hurried around their board, then glared at Ata in a bratty fashion. This older princess sighed as she realised it had only been a game of strategy for one of them. Unable to recall where each piece sat, her opponent blushed from embarrassment and hid behind that large cushion again.

They sat in awkward silence, until Ata offered an apology. Muffled by this pillow, Princess Ceindrych explained she had memorized sequences of moves but struggled to recall their board in detail. Small raindrops gathered at the corners of that cloudy stare. Both girls jumped when Sir Garrett cleared his throat, then proposed for this princess to remind herself.

He tapped a rook where it stood, “like so. While your grace studies the board, Princess Ata can answer your question.”

“If I must,” Ata smiled as this girl gingerly felt through their pieces before she explained, “I was quiet because in truth I have little choice, given how the vassals of my mother object to me.”

“That may have changed too,” gloved fingers rubbed the scar hidden under a grass-blue blindfold, “bards sing of your exploits. The druids respect you. So, their heirs regard you with respect.”

“B. to f-six,” Princess Ceindrych interjected with a small smirk when it captured a knight, “many think you may become a worthy steward of the land and a great leader for its people.”

#OctoberWorldbuilders 9: Gambling, however, is illegal in the Tithriki Administrstive Expanse. Like romantic relationships and eating in public, it wasn’t until first contact that Tithrik learned of betting. (Today, going on a dinner date is of course legal, if you’re one of THOSE kinds of people.)

#OctoberWorldbuilders 9: During Tithrik’s early pluralistic period, the Subadministrative for Interspecies Tolerance promoted a three-player version of Many-Tokens that centuries later is the only one people still play.
