Chalk pits like Catton Grove are valuable windows into our geological past, and increasingly threatened in Norfolk and Suffolk as they get backfilled or landscaped away. Coastal exposures are not enough for #science and #geoconservation.

A group of people in Catton Grove Chalk Pit looking at a recently cleaned-up geological exposure. There is a tiered embankment on the left covered in cascading ivy - it forms the retaining wall of a backfilled quarry area. The recently cleaned-up geological exposure at Catton Grove Chalk Pit, about 8 ft high and 15 ft wide. It is overlying by reddish- brown sediments of the Norwich Crag. It is overshadowed by trees.
