Our Lady of Sorrows, 1943, by #MaríaIzquierdo (Mexican, 1902-1955). Private collection; source, www.artsy.net/artwork/mari... #OurLadyOfSorrows #FeastOfOurLadyOfSorrows #artherstory #womenartists

A bust-length painting of the Virgin Mary behind a display of religious offerings. Mary is centered between two pink curtains that loop over to the left and right edge of the artwork, respectively. She has brown skin and a gold halo; she wears a red dress and blue head covering. Her hands are clasped before her as she raises her eyes heavenward. The 2-level blue-draped ledge in front of her is filled with various objects, including glass half-filled with red liquid; green wheat sprouts in ceramic pots, seasonal fruits (including watermelon and oranges); cut flowers; two unlit but previously used candles, lying flat; paper flags; and devotional statuettes. The artist's signature appears in the bottom left corner of the painting.

Our Lady of Sorrows / Pained Madonna, 1550s, by #PlautillaNelli (Italian, 1524-88). Held by the Museum of the Last Supper of Andrea del Sarto; source, artherstory.net/plautilla-ne... #OurLadyOfSorrows #FeastOfOurLadyOfSorrows #artherstory #womenartists #nuntastic

A painting of a bust length Madonna, bowing her head (covered with a long gold cloth) toward the left edge of the painting. She wears a somber colored robe over a white undergarment. Her hands are crossed over her breast, right hand over left. In her left hand she clutches a white cloth. At the bottom left of the painting, on a stone ledge, sits a gold chalice filled with red liquid. Next to it are instruments of Christ's Passion, and blood stains. On the edge of the ledge, at the very bottom of the painting, is this inscription in all capital letters: “Non vi si pensa quanto sangue costa” ("No one thinks of how much blood it costs").
