We're two-for-two with PC-88 YM2203 covers! You guys may remember that my first ever cover to use custom wavetables was my Famicom 2A03+Namco 163 cover of the shop theme from Hudson Soft's 1987 action RPG Faxanadu. For anyone unaware, Faxanadu was an official Famicom/NES spinoff of Nihon Falcom's 1985 monster hit computer game Xanadu (hence the portmanteau). I've since played and beaten the actual game, and it has become one of my favorite games put out by Hudson. I've also realized that it'd be amazing to see what it would be like if the game's great music, composed by Bomberman series composer Jun Chikuma, was arranged for the YM2203/OPN chip akin to the music for Falcom's own Ys and Sorcerian, which both released the same year as Faxanadu. I've actually been wanting to cover the entire soundtrack in that style, but I really don't know when I will. I've now figured that I might as well do at least one of the songs from the game in the meantime; better something than nothing, ya know (and it's fitting since I recently relistened to the Sorcerian soundtrack; highly recommended for any '80s game fanatic). I went with the theme you hear in the stem area of the game since it's the game's first field/overworld theme, making it a good demonstration of the 1987 Falcom style. And I gotta say, this idea turned out very well like I was hoping. While the style that Jun used on the 2A03 for Faxanadu is very much its own thing, and I kept some of the original PSG textures as best I could, I think it still translated well to the style that Yuzo Koshiro and Mieko Ishikawa used back at Falcom. Then again, I'm a huge fan of that style they used in '87, so it could just be me being a biased nut. Either way, I'm very happy with how this turned out, and I hope you all enjoy it. ^w^
