A very large book from a Folger’s Shakespeare Library interactive installation at the National Building Museum in DC (2022) for #PalacesandGardens #PagesandPalaces #EastCoastKin #Shakespeare #MidsummerNightsDream #theater #experienceart #museum

A life-sized book, open to show both pages, with the lines written in script “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women mearly players.” William Shakespeare
“What transforms your state of mind? A bright sunny day? A page-turner of a book? An amazing theater experience? A beautifully designed space? Two of Washington's esteemed private cultural institutions-the
National Building Museum and the Folger Shakespeare Library have come together and transformed the Great Hall to present The Playhouse-a theater that welcomes guests for evening performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and invites visitors to experience a delightful immersive installation, special tours, and hands-on activities during the day.
Theater design affects how audiences observe, or even participate, in the action. Tiered galleries, open yards for "groundlings," stages in the round, or in stark black boxes all change how an audience experiences the performance. The stage here at the Museum was designed specifically for this non-traditional space, using the Great Hall's soaring ceilings, clerestory windows, and rows of columns to create a magical backdrop for A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Even if you're not seeing the play, you can experience being part of it. We invite visitors to step inside these life-sized pages based on Joanna Robsons diminutive double-concertina book from the Folger Shakespeare Library collection,
The Knavish Lad, which
illustrates every scene from the play. We welcome all to act out a scene, perform a play of your own, or simply appreciate the beauty of the artist's work.
