To conclude our landscape themed week here's a very rare example of Elwin Hawthorne's work in this genre: urban views predominate in his known catalogue of paintings. This is a watercolour of "Purbeck Hlls" by him from 1934. #ElwinHawthorne #EastLondonGroup #Purbecks #Dorset

Surviving examples of portraits by Group artists are rather thin on the ground, unfortunately but I think that we've got enough to run a themed week on them so, here goes! This is "Lilian" by Elwin Hawthorne from c.1935/36. The two of them got married in 1937. #ElwinHawthorne

For day two of our "rarely seen" themed week, here's one that I have shown here occasionally in the past but, by no means regularly. This is "Dagenham" by Elwin Hawthorne that most likely dates to the early 1930s. #ElwinHawthorne #Dagenham #EastLondonGroup

I thought I'd run a theme of watercolours this week as a bit of a change from showing oils most of the time. The first one is a great favourite of mine & one which I covet deeply! This is "Still Life" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1928. #ElwinHawthorne #EastLondonGroup

Good evening, Steve @squaremileguide.bsky.social & how interesting, thank you. Elwin Hawthorne also painted "St Mark's Church, Victoria Park" but in 1930. It is almost the identical viewpoint to Harold's painting but quite different in its feel & treatment. #ElwinHawthorne #EastLondonGroup

Ah, excellent, Simon @simonziegler.bsky.social Isn't fascinating how these sorts of images can bring back such memories. Here's "The Entrance to Morden College, Blackheath" also by Elwin Hawthorne but this time from 1938. #ElwinHawthorne #Blackheath #EastLondonGroup

Good morning, Beth @bethcooper.fyi & thanks so much for "spreading the word" to Pam @pamnashes.bsky.social too. Here's a lovely watercolour sketch of "Blackheath" by Elwin Hawthorne that most likely dates from c.1933/34. #ElwinHawthorne #SundayMorning #EastLondonGroup #Blackheath

Good morning, Simon @simonziegler.bsky.social & how interesting, thank you. Elwin Hawthorne painted extensively in Blackheath but, sadly, only a few pieces survive. Here's "The Princess of Wales, Blackheath" by him from 1934. #ElwinHawthorne #SundayMorning #EastLondonGroup

Good morning, John @rentouljohn.bsky.social & thanks for the RT here this morning & I hope all's well with you. Here's another one that might qualify for that #SundayMorning feeling. This is "St Thomas's Church, Stepney" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1931. #ElwinHawthorne #EastLondonGroup

Good morning, Margaret @hollinsmargaret.bsky.social & thank you: I'm very glad that you enjoyed seeing it. The church was St Andrew's Presbyterian church in Blackheath that was demolished in the 1960s. Here's Elwin Hawthorne's squared up photo of the scene from 1934. #ElwinHawthorne #SundayMorning

Good morning, Jan @janjonesauthor.bsky.social & thank you. Here's another one that could very easily be described as having a " #SundayMorning" feel to it: this is "Church near Blackheath" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1934 which is in the collection at Manchester City Art Gallery. #ElwinHawthorne
