A maΕ‚e Downy Woodpecker high up in a tree with pale brown branches, and somehow hanging on the end of a tiny branch where he had been poking around looking for bugs. The bird had a black and white striped head with a red patch on the back, a white front, and dark brown/black spotted back and wings with a large white patch on the middle of the back. I shot this photo in Aperture mode, which created a blurred background of green leaves and blue sky that appear as out-of-focus points of light known as bokeh balls. Seen at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

A maΕ‚e Downy Woodpecker with a white front, black wings and tail checkered with white spots, a white patch on the back, and a black and white striped head with a red patch across the back.
