Captain Olimar and the Pikmin have something of an understanding.

If you asked Olimar, he wouldn't be able to tell you what it is. In fact, it'd be more likely that he'd ask you what you were talking about — and then he'd go back to being the only person to treat the Pikmin as more than just allies, but as his close personal friends.

If you asked the Pikmin — and you really could, if you wanted to try — you would get back a series of very abstract answers. It would take some time, obviously; you'd have to format your question in a way that they could understand, and they'd have to shape their answers into something comprehensible to you. But if you did all of that, you would get a vague but coherent answer back: if translated into plain language, it would be something along the lines of "we knew each other better once".

If you asked Moss, on the other hand — and I don't know why you would ask Moss, but I guess you could — she'd bark, and wag her tail, and if her bones were any younger she'd get up and spin in a happy circle. But she's an old dog; the only people she'd actually be willing to do that for would be Olimar and the Pikmin, and you can't really ask her why.

But that's exactly the thing, isn't it? You can't ask Moss what she's feeling, but for Olimar and the Pikmin, you can.

…And maybe that's all the commonality they need.
