Captain Olimar and the Pikmin have something of an understanding.

If you asked Olimar, he wouldn't be able to tell you what it is. In fact, it'd be more likely that he'd ask you what you were talking about — and then he'd go back to being the only person to treat the Pikmin as more than just allies, but as his close personal friends.

If you asked the Pikmin — and you really could, if you wanted to try — you would get back a series of very abstract answers. It would take some time, obviously; you'd have to format your question in a way that they could understand, and they'd have to shape their answers into something comprehensible to you. But if you did all of that, you would get a vague but coherent answer back: if translated into plain language, it would be something along the lines of "we knew each other better once".

If you asked Moss, on the other hand — and I don't know why you would ask Moss, but I guess you could — she'd bark, and wag her tail, and if her bones were any younger she'd get up and spin in a happy circle. But she's an old dog; the only people she'd actually be willing to do that for would be Olimar and the Pikmin, and you can't really ask her why.

But that's exactly the thing, isn't it? You can't ask Moss what she's feeling, but for Olimar and the Pikmin, you can.

…And maybe that's all the commonality they need.

Anyways today's combo prompt is Spaceship + Species Change. So I made the Hocotate Spaceship into a spacedog.

Louie rides on a space dog that is designed after the Hocotate Ship. The pup is grey with a bright pink back and face, a bell around its neck, a propellor tail, and has bright blue eyes. Its pupils resemble goat pupils, to call back to the ship's steering weel.

Olimar shrugs. “We can try it.”

“No we absolutely cannot ‘try it’, Olimar,” the ship replies. It’s never heard a more idiotic idea in its life, and it’s heard an awful lot of idiotic ideas since they first set off for this planet! “You’d more likely blow us all to smithereens than accomplish anything valuable, and that’s before we get to the fact that you don’t know how it would affect my flight characteristics, and —”

“Hey, at least it’d keep it away from Louie!” Olimar protests, motioning towards the other man. “You know he almost set you on fire today. Again.”

“If you bring that thing anywhere near my jets I’ll set you on fire.”

Olimar huffs. “It was just a suggestion, but if it’s so worthless then I guess I’ll just go back to being productive, unlike you two.”

The ship scoffs. “Louie, tell Olimar he’s an idiot.”

Louie snickers. “What it said.”

“Fine!” Olimar rolls his eyes. He calls over a few Pikmin, and they happily carry the Flare Cannon back into range of the ship’s tractor beam.
