Sh 2-279 Running Man Nebula / M43 De Mairan's Nebula / M42 The Great Nebula in Orion - telescope processed image. The running man nebula - The complex comprises three NGC reflection regions—NGC 1973, NGC 1975, and NGC 1977—divided by dark dust lanes that silhouette a running human figure. Sh 2-279 Running Man Nebula / M43 De Mairan's Nebula / M42 The Great Nebula in Orion - unprocessed image. The running man nebula - Located just 0.6 degrees north of the Orion Nebula (M42), it is ionized and illuminated primarily by the bright young subgiant star 42 Orionis.
