October 10th – fuzzy

Fox might have almost died. Just a little.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Besides, thinking was somewhat beyond her, at the moment. Her head throbbed. Actually, her entire body throbbed, her head was just the worst offender.
Fox tried to sit up, but couldn’t quite muster the strength to do so, so instead she sank back onto the bed with a groan.
There was a scrape of chair legs on stone and a moment later Av’ry appeared at the bars, a stern-faced guard shadowing his steps.
“You’re finally awake! You really had me worried this time, Fox,” he said.
“I’m not dead, then?” she croaked. “I wasn’t certain.”
“Not quite. Though it was a close thing.”
She could tell. Heavy-duty healing left a mark, and she had been subjected to it often enough to recognize the familiar ache. Not just the mending of a trifling wound, either. Someone with skill had reached into her every vein, power burning through her like a wildfire.
It wasn’t an experience she would ever recommend. It was better than being dead, but only by the slimmest of margins. If you had a low pain tolerance, it could easily tip the other way.
“What exactly happened? I’m a little fuzzy on the details.”

October 9th – raid

Nik has always a small hubris problem.

But, is K’allon right to be concerned?

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“I’m being absurd? She just told me she plans to raid this camp alone. That is absurd. Two dozen bandits, maybe more. Hostages. What is she thinking?”
“We’ve seen her handle groups of people before.”
“Nowhere near this many. And most of those times she barely made it out herself. If those hostages die because she is trying to show off…”
“A smaller group will be better for stealth,” T’orrin tried again.
“And if anything goes wrong?” K’allon argued. “This is a terrible plan.”
Just then, T’orrin saw the first curls of smoke rising from the camp.
“You probably should have brought this up before now,” he observed. “We’re here.”
“I didn’t know the plan before now. You need to call this off. Send for reinforcements.”
T’orrin hesitated, but only for a moment. “I trust her to handle this.”
“Well, I’m going to go talk to her. Tell her to reconsider.”
“K’al,” T’orrin called him back. “I’m asking you to stand down on this.”
K’allon raised an eyebrow. “And if I refuse?”

October 8th – lizard

Fox might be in a bit of a tight spot, here. But the truth can only make it worse.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“Isn’t this much better?” R’allick returned his full attention to her. “Just the two of us?”
“Oh, much. But it would be even better without these,” Fox raised her shackled wrists with a small smile.
“No, no my dear. I insist that you keep the jewelry on. Consider it a gift.” A cool, lizard’s smile beamed back at her.
“Come now. Surely someone as powerful as you isn’t threatened by me?” she wheedled.
“Threatened? No. But I really love this carpet, and I would hate to get any of your blood on it, should you have any funny ideas.”
“What makes you think I would try anything?” she replied, all innocence.
“I hear that you have been taking an unguided tour of my temple.”
“Oh, that was a misunderstanding. I just got a little lost.” Fox knew that there was no chance of him believing that, but an interrogation was like any other negotiation: you had to hold some things back, so that you had something to yield later on.
“And the guard you tied up?”
“That wasn’t me. I have no idea how that happened.”

October 7th – comparison

Nik has plans to bring back some traditions from her old life!

K’allon is a bit nervous about it.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“Fun, maybe, but is this really a good idea?” K’allon fell in step behind them.
“This is a fantastic idea.” Nik shot him a wicked smile.
“If you say so. Doesn’t really seem in line with the whole discipline thing you were going on about just now.”
“I meant every word of that. But if you expect your people to work hard, you’ve got to give them a chance to blow off a little steam, too.”
“This how you did it back in the day?”
	“Nah…”
	“I didn’t think so.” K’allon smirked.
“No, this is going to be pretty tame in comparison.” Nik laughed in response. “But there is a limit to what we have access to, out here. We’ll just have to make do.”
K’allon shook his head, ruefully. “So, what I am hearing is that all soldiers are as reckless as you?”
“Only the good ones.” She winked and jogged ahead to catch up with her crew.
S’immi moved to follow, but K’allon grabbed his shoulder and pulled him back.
“Hold on just a second, friend. You want to tell me why I didn’t know anything about this? It is a little embarrassing, given my position. And yours.”

October 6th – rice

The bandit leader has kindly invited his new hostages for dinner!

Nik has some thoughts on his true abilities.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“Come now. I may be outranked by present company, I’m not a chief or a prince, but I’m also not stupid.” Nik scoffed. “A bandit leader with no weapon, no scars, with soft, uncalloused hands? Possible, I suppose, if you left the dirty work to your men. But I saw the way they spoke to you; they respect you, and they wouldn’t if you were the man I just described. The only conclusion left is that you don’t wield a weapon because you don’t need one. Am I wrong?”
D’orril chuckled softly. “No, I’ll admit that you aren’t. Perhaps I should be more careful, carry a weapon, at least for show. Wouldn’t want the queen to find out and decide that I am worth her attention. I don’t fancy being drained dry and stuck in her tower.”
“Can’t say I blame you for that,” Nik muttered.
“Either way, you can see why I recognized his highness here. I served the crown for a long time, in their army.”
“I am still surprised that you recognize me. It was years ago, and I was much younger.” T’orrin replied.
“Weren’t we all, highness?” D’orril shrugged.
The tent flap swung open and one of the bandits carried in a platter of roasted meat, cheese-covered bread, rice, and fruit.
“Ah, our food is here. Excellent. Just set that down on the table.”

For #DawnsBlood the main villain is angry about betrayal and frustrated with people. He has no faith they will not ruin the world, left to their own devices.

The secondary villain just wants what she is owed, what she worked hard for, and doesn't want to see a newcomer promoted ahead of her.

October 5th – wall

This prison break is going well!

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“Well, as much as I would enjoy that,” the hooded figure replied. “I am afraid we are all out of time for today. I really do need to be going.”
“You aren’t going anywhere, little girl,” he snarled.
“I hate to break this to you, but that really isn’t up to you.” She shrugged. “And don’t call me ‘little girl.’”
As the mage raised his hand to strike, Av’ry suddenly groaned and clutched the sides of his head. Before Mikiva could ask what was wrong, the woman in black waved her hand, throwing the guard into the stone wall like a ragdoll. He slid to the floor, unconscious.
Mikiva’s jaw dropped. “What in the Void just happened?”
“She’s a mage!” Av’ry groaned. “How did I miss that?”
“More importantly, why did she wait so long to use it?”
As Mikiva spoke a loud, screeching wail arose from deep within the fort.
“That’s why,” Av’ry shouted over the deafening roar. “They have a Sensitive here. Any use of foreign magic and he sets off alarms all over the base. Every soldier and mage in the place will be here any moment. We’re screwed.”

October 4th – contract

I don’t post parts with Jade often, but weirdly this is two back-to-back this week!

Mikiva might know the man currently trying to kill them from her old life.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Mikiva tore off the loose hood. Her eyes widened and she quickly moved around in front of the man to get a better look, stepping into his line of vision for the first time.
“Gods, Mikiva?” the man blurted. “Seems like you’ve managed to keep your retirement interesting. What are you doing here, with a fugitive from Esrasea?”
“I take it you two have met?” Jade raised an eyebrow.
“You could say that. As R’all here was just far too transparent about,” Mikiva shot him a withering glare, “we were once in the same line of work. Which means these are assassins. Azure Scorpions, to be more specific. This many men…someone is laying out some serious coin for you, Jade.”
“And for the death of anyone who stands in our way,” R’all added. “You know your status grants you no immunity.”
“Of course I do.” She rolled her eyes. “I’ve done my share of contracts involving former members.”
“So, you know that we will still have to kill you.”
“I know you can try.” Mikiva smiled. “But if you are the best they sent, I am not too worried.”
R’all glowered at her but said nothing.

October 3rd – petal

Jade is alone in the woods. Sort of.

It isn't living up to her expectations, so far.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

The sun shone through the forest canopy, painting the mossy ground with dappled light. Jade had been walking for some time now, and she had not come across another living thing. Not a bird, not a squirrel, nothing. The perfect silence was both unsettling and unnatural. She didn’t have time for this.
Since walking didn’t seem to be getting her anywhere, Jade decided to stop for a moment, resting on a rock next to a small creek. Dangling her feet in the water, she noted that it was completely crystal clear; not even a petal or twig marred the surface. This place was more like a painting of a forest then a real one. She had to admit to a certain disappointment in herself.
“Come on,” Jade muttered to no one in particular. “Is this the best you can do? Where is the attention to detail?”
Hearing a rustling behind her, she reached for the sword on her belt. After a tense moment, a small green frog hopped out of the reeds, landing at her feet. It stared at her with its red eyes for a moment, then croaked defiantly and plunged into the creek, stirring up silt from the bottom.
“That’s much better,” Jade approved. “Let’s keep that up.”

October 2nd – dent

Fox had a difficult night. And she isn’t too happy with the souvenir.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

She woke to a crick in her neck and a stabbing pain in her spine. Rolling over, Fox plucked the rock from the dent it had furrowed into her back. She felt terrible, which wasn’t entirely surprising. What was strange was the fact that the worst pain seemed to be coming from her right hand.
Opening her palm she found the source, a deep burn in the shape of a demonic symbol. She studied it for a moment, trying to figure out how that was even possible. It had to be because demonic tokens crossed the boundaries of existence. It was a real object that transitioned to a dream. Apparently, at some point during its destruction, it had transitioned back.
Fox rubbed her hand gently. It was probably going to scar like that. Lovely.
	“You’re finally up.”
Fox started, looking over to find Av’ry seated nearby, watching her. He held out a mug of water, which she accepted gratefully.
	“You look awful,” she noted.

September 30th – guard

Conveniently, this picks up pretty much where yesterday left off!

They probably should have just left the barefoot and hooded woman alone…

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“Don’t be stupid.” Se’ul rolled his eyes. “We need to go.”
M’iol sighed. “Very well. You’re no fun, you know that?” Turning back to the girl one last time, he bent down and looked into her eyes.	“Still, it’s a shame. Pretty thing like this, just going to rot in that tower for the rest of her life.”
At that, the woman leaned forward, ever so slightly, so that her lips touched his.
The guard seemed pleasantly surprised for a moment, returning the kiss willingly, but then it turned into something else. She wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him fast as he began to struggle, trying to pull away.
T’orrin watched, too stunned to even react, as the man’s struggle weakened and finally stopped. M’iol slumped against her, and she stepped back, letting him fall to the floor.
Se’ul shook himself and took a step towards the woman, drawing his blade. She turned and raised her hand, waving it almost dismissively. A flash of light arced between them, and the guard dropped to the ground.
She strolled over to the fallen man, pulled him up, and placed her mouth over his. This time, T’orrin didn’t mistake it for a kiss. It was closer to a bite, like she was consuming something, drawing it out of him.
@charliedeltawrites.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 5:12 AM

September 29th – well

T’orrin really did not think this plan through.

Nor does he have good answers for these questions.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Slipping inside, T’orrin closed the door quietly behind him. And turned around to find two men in guard uniforms watching him intently. Perhaps he was wrong about his luck.
“Well, well, well,” the first man stepped forward, “we were told to watch for people sneaking out of the city, not in. But this works just as well.”
“I have no idea what you are talking about,” T’orrin stammered. “We are just cutting through our friends’ house, on our way back from hunting in the woods. We do it all the time. Just ask them.”
“Hunting, eh?” The second man sneered. “Where is your game, then?”
	“Not my lucky day.”
	“And your weapons?”
	“Left them in the woods.”
“And her shoes?” He nodded towards the woman’s bare, bleeding feet.
T’orrin hesitated. He didn’t have an answer for that one. It didn’t really matter anyway, because it was obvious that they weren’t buying his story.
The first guard stepped closer and pushed back the woman’s hood.

September 28th – prime (primary)

Av’ry would like everyone to consider maybe staying safe and hidden, rather than making a deal with someone who already tried to kill them.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“K’ivin’s people have been seen in the region. They’ve been asking around. Looking for us.” Mikiva watched his face.
“K’ivin? I thought you said it was someone who didn’t want to kill us. Your boss made it pretty clear how he felt the last time we spoke.”
“It sounds like that may have changed. Remember, K’ivin is a tactician, not an assassin. Killing us was never his primary goal. He may have learned the truth, or part of it and adjusted his plans. Maybe I should try making contact?”
“Can we take that risk?” Av’ry seemed skeptical. “Honestly, the tactician thing may be a problem more than anything. If he decides we are a risk, he’ll cut us down without regret. And if you leave here, I doubt they’ll welcome you back.”
“Should I be concerned with that? I’m not planning to buy property here. Fox is nearly done her task and then we have to start making plans for the future. If K’ivin is willing to bury the hatchet, maybe we should go for it.”
“I know he was your mentor, but we can’t trust him. He’s already proven that.”
Mikiva pinched the bridge of her nose, obviously frustrated. “I agreed with him at the time. We got past it.”
	“That was different.”
@charliedeltawrites.bsky.socialSep 27, 2026, 5:12 AM

September 27th – delay

Nik is having a difficult day.

She might not be able to win this fight, but that doesn’t mean she has to accept defeat so easily.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

If she had known that sooner, she may have even been able to use it. As it stood, she doubted it would do more than delay her loss. But if she could even manage to bloody his nose, she would take it.
Nik pushed herself back up and smiled.	“That the best you got?”
“Come now.” Os’win shook his head. “You know better than anyone that it isn’t.”
Electricity crackled between them and knocked her to the ground again. She groaned and struggled to her feet, more slowly this time.
	“Just stay down,” he advised.
“Sorry. Far too stubborn for that. Surely you remember.”
“Very well,” he sighed. “I am in no real hurry.”
Almost casually, Os’win raised his hand and electricity coursed through her.
@charliedeltawrites.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 5:12 AM

September 26th – observe

Av’ry often wishes his life was less interesting.

He hangs around with a bad crowd for that.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“What happens now?” he asked.
“We will make contact with the acolytes. We will inform them of your arrival, then send for you.”
	“Couldn’t we go with you?”
“I would advise against it. Unlike our people, they are very hostile to outsiders.”
Av’ry stifled a laugh. They both flipped up the golden hoods on their cloaks and began to climb. Fox sighed and sat down on a rock, settling in for a long wait.
“Well, it looks like this is going to get interesting,” Mikiva observed.
“It wasn’t interesting already?” Av’ry laughed. “I would hate to see what you call exciting.”
“You’ve seen it, and you did hate it,” she replied.
Av’ry thought back to the fight with the demon and shuddered. “Well, let’s hope today doesn’t get that interesting.”
“Let’s hope nothing does again,” Fox agreed.
“What do you think we’ll find up there?” Mikiva squinted up at the mountain through the setting sun.
@charliedeltawrites.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 5:12 AM

September 25th – nations

Nik has some bad news for the rebels about the queen they are trying to oppose.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“Do you know why they would use so few, to guard such important documents?”
“They are trying to appear unimportant, so that they won’t be targeted.,” K’allon replied. “Too many guards let the local bandits know that they are worth robbing. And Ceriza is stretched thin. She has been expanding her territory too quickly and doesn’t have many people left behind to protect what remains.”
“I think you misunderstand something, spymaster. I know Ceriza.” Nik shook her head slightly at that. “She is arrogant, ambitious, and callous, but she isn’t stupid. She can afford to spread herself thin, at least by the numbers, because she has power. Surely you have noticed that she commands an unusually high number of mages?”
“Well, yes. We assume that she recruited them from her conquered nations.”
“Well then, it seems I get the honor of telling you her biggest secret.” Nik leaned in conspiratorially. “All that power she takes, from the people that she Binds? It doesn’t just go to her.”
“What?” She had his attention now, and for the first time, he fully turned to face her. “Are you saying that she can create mages? That can’t be possible.”
@charliedeltawrites.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 5:11 AM

September 24th – meddle

Sometimes, the key to surviving as a guard is to know when you are badly outmatched.

#DawnsBlood

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“What gave you the impression that I was trying to hide?” he asked softly.
Er’end shivered involuntarily as a chill ran up his spine; it suddenly seemed much colder.
“Look, you can’t be down here,” he repeated. “I am going to have to take you up to the captain. You can explain yourself to him.”
“I am afraid I am far too busy for that.” The man’s voice was calm and even, unconcerned. “I have people to speak to and errands to run.”
“You can speak to whomever you share a cell with, and no one else.”
“I will have to decline your offer. If you value your life, you will not meddle in my affairs.”
The interloper had been slowly closing the distance as they spoke, and now Er’end realized with a start that he was within arms reach. Raising his sword, he directed the point towards the man.
“You will stop where you are! Freeze!”
“Poor choice of words,” the stranger purred, placing a hand on the guard’s shoulder.
@charliedeltawrites.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 10:02 PM

For me, this would be Nik from the #DawnsBlood series.

She is bisexual and biromantic.

Nik is a powerful electromancer who joined a rebellion against the queen who imprisoned her for years to siphon her power.

And who also used to be her lover...
