Colour photo taken late at night, at floor level, of the corner of a building - white textured stone and terracotta plaster above - in the right half of the frame, and an alleyway disappearing into the distance on the left. There is a tiny chink of light spilling from a first storey window in the alleyway, but it is otherwise in complete darkness; and I n contrast, the corner of the building on the right is in a pool of bright warmth from a streetlight above. Standing on the flagstone pavement just at the corner is a discarded bottle of prosecco, with a single stem red rose, dried and withered, sticking out of the neck, its leaves making a chaotic shadow on the wall behind. When I took the picture yesterday I thought it looked quite sad and forlorn, and like the end of something, but as I'm looking at it again this morning, it's more a picture of resilience and defiance and hope and new beginnings.

Colour photo, at the vaporetto water bus stop. The photo mainly shows the floor - warm grey, industrial, functional, scuffed and mottled by years of wear. Five sets of waiting seated crossed legs along the right hand side of the picture, sandals and loafers and black trousers and jeans, with hands resting on the knees holding mobile phones, lit by a streak of bright sunlight from the open door at the far end. There is another set of seats opposite but almost entirely out of frame, except for a pair of lower legs dressed in chinos the same colour as the floor, and white trainers, in the top left hand corner. There's nothing inherently melancholy in the picture, but it feels bleak to me, lonely and atomised, and like whatever we're waiting for might end up not being worth it. I'm not in a particularly cheerful mood today, as you can probably tell, but if you're reading this I hope your day is full of joy though :)

An external wall in various shades of terracotta coloured brick, bathed in warm sunshine. Sticking out from the centre of the wall, separated by two shuttered windows, are two chimney flues - big vertical rectangles of protruding brick which taper to a trapezium, which gives them the vague shape of puppet heads. Underneath both of them there is a small dark window, which the flues half cover, which look like open guffawing mouths. The flue on the right has tiny square windows towards the top, with a flowerpot perched in each, which in this context look like eyes. In shape and placement and colour-palette and expression, they immediately vividly reminded me of the grumpy old Muppet hecklers Statler and Waldorf, companionably and silently chortling their derision at the state of the world.

Night time colour photo. Two upper storey windows with dark green wooden shutters, in an ivory coloured wall, lit by a bright hot white streetlight attached a wrought iron arm jutting out from the building in the upper left corner of the image. Suspended from the arm just behind the light is what I think is a security camera (boo!), droplet shaped and modern-looking and frankly sinister. The disproportionately enlarged shadow of the camera falls on the wall in such a way that two small black circular vents become the blank eyes of a hovering little ghost (boo!). The ghost actually looks more sweet than sinister though.

Black and white photo. On the right, the roof and edge of a low stone house, which looks old and traditional, with cloud-streaked sky above. The left half of the frame are four flights of a temporary-looking outside staircase, although to the best of my knowledge the staircase has been there for years, attached to a visible sliver of white building, two storeys higher than the building on the right. The staircase has sides made of netting, so the metal stairs, uniform diagonal slashes between platforms, are visible through it. The contrast between the modern, sheer, ethereal pale grey of the left half of the image contrasts strongly with the older, solid, robust, darker grey of the right hand side. Also worth noting that, following the apparent architectural law of "no such thing as a straight line in Venice", nothing in the image reads as quite as geometric as it ought to be, making the whole scene feel slightly drunk.
