New idea: in the late Cretaceous this clade of Tritylodonts would have developed a muscular lip-pad as a digging/soil-foraging tool, and then right after the k/pg it gets elongated and co-opted for browsing until you could reasonably call it a trunk. #specevo #cynodont #cretaceous

A black-and-white pencil sketch of a small, fluffy, gopher-like Tritylodont cynodont with a very silly face. Its upper lip is extended and has a large pointed pad on the end. A rough black-and-white sketch of a much larger, sort of Pantodont-like descendant of the Tritylodont in the previous drawing. The elongated upper lip is now even longer, approaching the shape of a trunk. Its mouth is open and the four tusk-like front teeth are visible.
