This image shows the magnificent Drawing Room and its massive carved fireplace inside Cragside, a historic 19th century country house near Rothbury in Northumberland, England.
The fireplace is carved from Italian marble and alabaster, featuring intricate figures, book-matched marble patterns, and Ionic columns. it stands 6 metres tall from floor to ceiling and weighs 10 tonnes. It is so heavy that it is seated directly on the bedrock below.
The red walls are covered in a number of important paintings including a Turner watercolour. Between the walls and the glazed ceiling is ornate arched plasterwork. A large chandelier hangs from the ceiling in the centre of the room.
The room was built in the 1880s by architect Richard Norman Shaw for the Victorian industrialist and inventor Lord William Armstrong.
The room was completed just in time for the royal visit of the Prince of Wales and his family in August 1884 who came to inspect the intriguing new technologies of the house.
Cragside is famous for being Britain's original smart home, pioneering the use of hydroelectricity and hydraulic power.
It lays claim to be the first private house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity.

We recently visited Cragside, near Rothbury in Northumberland. Plenty to see & draw there, including the clocktower and former estate manager's house.
